Post by: Brian Crump on 30 June 2007, 09:36 PM
The drive to Bowral for lunch will be on Sunday 22nd July 2007.
The aim is to drive down - have lunch - meet all the new members - have lunch - talk cars - have fun.
Lunch will be at http://www.highlandsnsw.com.au/grandbar/index.html
You will find it at the corner of Bong Bong St and Wingecarribee St.
A meeting place in Sydney will be arranged closer to the time.
Please send me a pm if you are attending so that I can make a booking for lunch. I need to know by the 7th July.
Anyone and everone welcome - Austin Champs - Park's Commodore etc all included  ;D

Disclaimer; This event is not being organised by an official club. It is an event you choose to attend knowing that it is an informal outing undertaken strictly at your own risk. Sorry, I have to say all that.... ???

Oh, and take this as confirmation that we will be there! :)

BC,
what sort of times are you thinking of for this day...i am in sydney from 15th to friday20th, but may be able to hang around til the sunday if i could scam a lift...i would then need to return back to perth that arvo (even late)...is this at all feasible or are you going for a long trek that would see you return late in the day?

Nathan - Bowral is about 1.5 hours max from Sydney.
Lunch is 12 or so and probably be back in Sydney no later than 5pm - probably earlier. That would give you time to catch a plane back to WA. At least Mforcer and I will be coming back into town.....the others live on the edge of Sydney. One of us can fit you in. Looks like Craig will be doing a similar thing. I guess a 450SE can fit 4 people?  ;D ;D ;D

Not sure yet mate... Roger hasn't got back to me - and i don't think there's anyone else in the berra.

If you're definately gonna be leaving from here - i reckon we can meet in the city somewhere for a coffee before we take off.

Are you staying in a hotel while you're down here?  If so, let me know cause my mate works at the crown plaza and can hook you up a REALLY good room rate ay!!  Would be no stress at all...

I'm a comin'.  PM sent

I was going to swap rear seats from the 280se to give the kids padding.  But Oscarette isn't coming due to a BIG day at work for her on Monday and well, the kids are staying home too.  But that's Ok, I love driving the 350 by myself.  I keep saying the w116 is supposed to be a single seater.

It's a shame Crayford wont be able to get into Oscarette's ear for the day.  I spent 30mins this evening trying to convince oscarette we can pick up the Leichardt 6.9 this Friday.  No luck. :(

Meet time 8.30am for a 9am departure. That leaves time to get a coffee on the way and a chat in Bowral and a look at cars before we eat at 12.

I'd forgotton all about that Oscar - I'm not really one to hold grudges. Just leave me a cardboard cut-out and I'll take it up to the range some time ;D Only joking - I only make holes on cardboard.

I am coming over to Sydney to a Medical Course being held at the Sydney Masonic Centre - of all places, Brother Michel -  and I have a full day of lectures on Friday. I will be coming with my wife who has a brother who lives at Kellyville so we will be spending the weekend with him and his wife and flying out late on Sunday PM.

Thanks for the invitations fellas but I think I would have my throat cut if I didn't do the family thing on Sunday - but it's tempting.

I have contacted my Brother-in-law who was wondering what to do with us on Sunday so it looks like the four of us and his Alsation will be coming down for a drive to Bowral on Sunday.

Probably won't make the way-points or the formal luncheon but will catch up with some unfamiliar faces after lunch if that is all right.

Thanks for the kind meal offer Brian.

Hope to see some of you on Sunday.

Are you going to still be in Sydney on Sunday Nathan?

Arrrrrgh...

Disaster has struck in the Crayford department  >:( >:(

Went to collect Kermit from "mechanic" (alias thief) yesterday, and discovered as we drove to register it that it is leaking oil and fuel simultaneously (crack in fuel tank, mysterious "oh that must've just happened" massive oil leak), the speedo is screaming (literally), the car is drenched from leaking windscreen (and thief too lazy to cover it) so the carpets are mushy, cracked rear tail light, and somehow, somehow, this car got a blue slip not 5 days ago.

Apparently, I have paid money to get the car back worse than it arrived (and it went straight from MB Spares to thief). No oil or fuel leaks before it went there. No cracked tail light either. It seems that my money went, not to repairs, but to bribing the blue slip guy (who, conveniently, is a friend of thief).

Now, I don't want to make any wild accusatory statements here, but I am truly devastated that Kermit is now laid up in a shed on a farm in Gundagai (as far as we could safely drive with the fuel pissing out), and will be unable to join his fellow men this Sunday. Plus, I have just paid 12 months rego on my family car that currently is throroughly explosive and unusable. And we wasted a whole day and a Monaro-load of petrol (and we're talking a guzzling HQ here) on a useless trip.

We will still be there (I guess it's the Champ chariot instead), but how could this happen?? Am furious  >:(

Did they change the fuel filter and buggar something up?

Bill
Title: Re: Sydney Drive Day 22nd July 2007
Post by: crayford on 16 July 2007, 07:34 PM
Oh, thank you for reminding me...

My full service consisted of no filters being changed, transmission fluid not changed, but $55 worth of premium somehow going missing in an unregistered car with apparently no fuel leak until yesterday, when I came to pick it up.

Perhaps it wet itself with excitement...

And, if you're on here, thank you to John Skene at MB Spares, who gave us an honest appraisal of the car when we bought it, and gave Mr Crayford some very balanced and helpful advice this morning (Mr Crayford and I had been up all night, fluctuating between fury, disappointment and total confusion).

Where's this garage / mechanic stationed???  SERIOUSLY!

I got a pair of pliars and a blowtorch, and i knows me someone who needs some 'attitude adjusting'!   >:(

Seriously though, what's the name of the mechanics workshop??  So we know not to go there, at least not to service the car anyway..may still pay him a visit of other sorts...  ;)

Any time you feel a need to join in and offer us some wisdom it would be gratefully appreciated but I guess if you are like me you don't necessarily make a hobby out of your business.

Thank you for your professionalism in the past and for your ongoing Newsletter.

Crayford, that's incredibly sad news.  I'm dying to hear more and who the perpetrator/s were, but you're probably better off not posting those details publicly in case you have grounds for recourse.  I'm no legal beagle, but I'd hate to see the situation deteriorate further.
But feel free to vent this Sunday.

Which lense and how bad is it cracked?  I could bring a better spare with me on Sunday if you need one.

At least the Champ will be able to convey the Crayford's regardless of weather conditions. Bowral will be a bit chilly kids, so pack yr woolies, clean handkerchief, clean underwear and a shilling to ring home... 8)

My apologies John - that misinformation was passed on to me by someone else, and I had not seen your name written in full elsewhere. My thanks, anyway  :) :). And nice to know you drop in.

Will not post the name of the perpetrator of the Kermit assault, as am looking into my legal options at the moment, and wouldn't want to jeopardize anything.

Thanks for your kind offer Oscar, but I have a spare lens on the 350SE that I bought from same person. Providing he doesn't go about stripping more parts off it before I can tow it out of his place, I should have a replacement. Unfortunately, now that all these things have gone pear-shaped, there is a good chance Rolf Harris will end up being a donor car for parts for Kermit (which was supposed to be what the 350 was for, but already parts have disappeared, or thief has been too lazy to swap them). If said lens is missing, I will take you up on your offer (part of the white/reverse part is missing).

Am just so pissed off. No respect...

What time are you guys leaving?  How long does it take to get to Bowral?  I may get down there first and tag along if I get away early enough.  Or, I'll get to Goulburn and tag along from there.

Also, BC, what time are you expecting the collective us to be at Bowral?   I'm trying to work out what time I have to leave.
Cheers. :)

Oscar - we are due for lunch at 12 noon. I figure arrive a bit early to stand around, stamp yr feet, complain about the weather and talk car talk before lunch.....kick tyres, brag about the superior 350 performance - just the usual drill.
Styria will be there about 10.30 as he wants to leave before the sparrows so there will be someone to chat to...well, he is leaving Sydney at 9am and given his last highway performance, should be there very early - or in Goulburn lock up  ;D
Arrive when you want - JUST BRING CHANGE COS THE PLACE WON'T SPLIT THE BILL!!!!
www.travelmate.com.au will help you work out some travelling times. Go to the map-maker section.

Besides, I wanna zoom past Lake George.  I hear there's a stack of water in there now.  I've only ever seen it as scattered pools of water and mud.

Oh yeah, a coffee sounds good too.  The methamphetamine would've worn off by then. ::)

I remember lake george the same way...  It's sorta on it's way back to that.  The sheep are starting to all congregate towards the road again.  And there's water starting to creep towards the edge.

It will still be a Loooooong time before it's back to what it was about 10years ago.

Canberra crew:

Any update on where and when?

Seeing that BC wants us in Bowral at 12.00 now, I'm assuming we're leaving at about 10.00ish.  In any case, I'm aiming to leave home at 5.00 - 5.30 so I get in town by 9.00 - 9.30.

Man my back's aching.  My car was a brothel and  I'm only half way thru cleaning it.  It better not rain.

QuoteForcast in Sydney is for showers...
Of course it's going to bloody rain!!  :o
I polished the 450, took out the lambswool seat covers and cleaned them, shampooed the carpets, had an oil and filter change, plugs checked, timing reset and the bugger has picked up dirty fuel today and it can't go. :o
So, next car has been vacuumed and washed. Of course it will rain. :o
OK - so I've also done the windscreen with RainEx. That's enough to make sure it snows now....
Maybe I should take the ML for its 4WD capacity?  ;D

I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SORRY  :'( :'( :'(

Of all the times that disaster should strike once again (it's a frequent occurrence in the Crayford household), it's today, when everyone comes down my way and I have the opportunity to meander up the road at my leisure to meet my fellow 116 fans.

Instead, I have just returned from driving Mr Crayford to bloody Goulburn so he can catch a frickin' bus to Gundagai to go to Tumblong Wreckers in the morning to retrieve a dastardly W108 that we had to rescue from the thief / mechanic. Could it be worse? Well, he could have been retrieving a W123, I suppose....

Plus, he was going to take springs out of Rolf to put in Kermit (which was supposed to have been done) but oh my, what a surprise! Thief sold us Rolf and took out springs before he gave it to us. Oh, and when he took out the Holden engine that was in there (don't ask), he decided to take the transmission AND radiator as well. And when Mr Crayford rescued our "parts" 350SE from thief last week, there was hardly any of it left as thief had spent previous couple of days taking off everything he could possibly get away with.

So, there it is. I have missed my 116 debut, I have missed all of you, and I have missed all the glorious cars. And you even had spectacular weather. Bugger.

But I shall come to the next get-together, even if it's in Lismore  :). And if you'll still have me... ???

On another note, anyone know who I can report this guy to? He is supposed to be licenced, but I'm even starting to doubt that...

PS "Will someone please post some photos, if you took any?", she says, in a tiny voice...

It was an excellent run to Bowral.
Putting faces to the names was great.
It was nice to see (Brother, Dr) Bill from WA (WGB), Cameron from Canberra (SELfor50) and Cameron from Sydney (Mercules), Roger from Canberra (torana68), Simon from Griffith (Oscar), Brian from Sydney (Brian Crump), Michael from Sydney (Styria), John from Sydney (John Skeene), Craig from Turkey/Brisbane/Melbourne (CraigS), Michael (Mforcer), Matt from Sydney (matthew) and a few friends (some drove W116s, some drove other Benzes.

Thank you Brian for putting this on.
Paula and I both enjoyed it and so did Albert and Andrew.

Thanks for the warm welcome even though the day was a brief intro.

Great to put people to names.

Thank you for Brian for fitting me into the luncheon - I didn't realise I'd nicked his partner's seat and thanks to Brother Michel for several glasses of red.

All the best - Boarding a plane in a few minutes back to tha land of Milk and Honey.

We are going to Italy and a tour of Europe in 3 weeks time just to avoid the sanding of my car - I will see if this Next G Bigpond card is as International as they say.

See you around the traps - see Oscar I'm not violent at all. ;D

Well I got back at 9.30.  If you saw me here earlier, it was oscarette checking out what she missed out on.
I told her the Doctor from Perth came.

"Really!!!!  The cute one?"
"Hmmm, nah"  I said, "Nathan flew out on Saturday"  :D :D

I'm kidding :D.  Didn't happen Bill, though she was impressed with the turnout.  What dissappointed me the most was not spending some time with two people I wanted to meet due to the fact, who knows when and if we'll cross paths again.  Namely WGB and CraigS.

Craig you got whisked away by BC before I got a chance to offer the 350 to BC for a test drive in exchange for me in the Rolls.  And I think we met just as you were leaving.
Dr Bill, we shook hands early on and I don't know what happened after that.  The day was over and I was on my way home.  We're just going to have to do a West meets East and all stations in between.  Well, in Adelaide perhaps.

Crayford.  It was only on my way home that I realised I didn't meet you and crayfordette borat (your words, not mine), ahem - Mr Crayford.  There will be ample opportunity in the future.  Best wishes with your car/s' issues.   ;)  I've lost track.

I'd like to second Torana's motion for a carpark.  Remember an old thread started by Denis I think about where Aussies dine for lunch? Anywhere so long as the w116 remains in view. ;D

Not a criticism BC  ;) I want to thank you very much for organising the day.  They get better each time.
I also want to thank all those new faces I met today, albeit mostly very briefly.
And lastly, SELfor50, Mforcer and Rae for an entertaining trip from Canberra.  It's just so coooool being in a w116 convoy ;D ;D

I've got a couple of pics but the lighting is very poor.  :-[

You guys are so bloody lucky. I'd have been there with bells on had you all not been on the other side of the world.

Will someone point out who is who in Michel's photos above so that those of us who weren't there can put a face to and name ?

James

Thank you all for coming along yesterday. How amazing is it to have people from Turkey, Perth, Canberra, Sydney, and in between, all at the one place!! Even more amazing when you consider we exist as a forum without official membership or structure.
A very special thanks to Matt and Vince from the MBCNSW who don't yet own 116s but who may soon recognize the error of their ways and buy a real classic.  ;D Mind you, Delilah and the 126 are both very special vehicles.
Organising an event is the easy part. The success depends on people turning up and enjoying themselves, being brave enough to chat to new folks and introduce themselves.
Getting an appropriate venue and a carpark  is a little harder. I initially imagined we would have maybe 6 or 7 people and we ended up with 30 (although the flue claimed a few victims) and there were more who would have liked to be there but could not make it.
I'm happy to organize another in a few months - or equally as happy for someone else to organize an event.
Don't forget the All British Day on August 19th. I will be there but in another capacity so if anyone wants to organize something for it then go ahead.
Regards,
Brian

Now that I am back home in the winterless West (Grey overcast and Persisting Down) and entrenched in the world of Coughs Colds and Sore Holes I can take stock of what happened yesterday.

I now can put faces to a number of names but the hard part was putting a real name to a forum name and then attaching a face.

A minor criticism in the future might be to have name tags of some sort but it was really my fault for not having a full day available and following through from beginning to end.

I told my wife that I would be in with you guys for an hour and 2 1/2 hours later I emerged and felt I'd only very briefly spotted most of you. Michel and Brian and I meanwhile plotted world domination issues and the time sped away.

I am particularly annoyed I didn't speak to Oscar - other than a handshake - as I missed that "Simon" was "Oscar" when he introduced himself to me. Even though he doesn't think I'm cute - for which I shall be eternally grateful (maybe he is not a 'tache man) - I am sure we would have had a lot to talk about. Did you ever get the DVD's to work Oscar?

Anyway thanks for a memorable day and now that Mforcer has appointed me WA Badge representative I might even become rich, ;D

Bill

Yesterday was tip top!!

Thanks again to Mforcer and BC for organising!

Thanks to M, Rae and Oscar for doing the Canberra trek with us - was fun to be in the 116 convoy.   8)

Was a great day, look forward to more future outings....and after speaking with Mercules - the possible purchase of a Fordedes.  ;D
Hope y'all weren't too disgraced by the skin of my silver beast.

Thanks again peeps for reppin'.  Was a really good turnout, mechanically and peoplewise!

Cam.

Another thanks from Rae and I to Brian for organising such a fantastic day. I think we were all impressed with the enthusiastic turnout!

It was great meeting so many of our new friends and especially amazing the effort some went to. CraigS wins the award for furthest travel (Turkey) while WGB (Perth) gets an honourable mention. Oscar wins the award for most driving on the day!

The drive up from Canberra in convoy was fantastic (thanks Oscar and SELfor50 too)!

Look...  there at the end!

That's a damn I-tal-yun car next to a Limey flying BRICK!

GEEZ!

Couldn't you get ANYBODY else to give them parking?  There wasn't any room near the portapotty or the porno book store?

No, not yet unfortunately.  But only from lack of trying.  I've been wanting to get a laptop to put all this stuff on plus I get preoccupied with the house which is nearing completion  I'm sooooo looking forward to having my shed back i want to also setup a cheap desktop in there with all the info i have on it.  Plus a net connection ;D  Thankgod for wireless.  I just realised the old phone line to the shed hasn't been reconnected and probably can't now. :o

Fair enough BC.  And as for driving the SSII.  I can't find your post but a chauffeured ride around the block will do. ;D  But you mentioned "man of the spur" again and perhaps a few cryptic clues.  I dunno, was he at Bowral??

Ah well, the failure of the 450SE to proceed on the due date has been diagnosed as a faulty spark plug. Hmmm. Someone sure slipped up there. And no; 'twas not me.  :-X
The green limo is now back in fine fettle.

I think we had 8 or 9 w116's, 2xW1126's a Lancia and BC's Spirit.   Most brought partners and some brought other members.  Say about half were members.  15 or so.

BTW,  MOTS, Man of The Spur.  ::) I saw robgee's post the other day in BC's 450se for sale thread.  How slow am I?  Dont respond ;D It just never clicked.  It's taken me a few days to speak up and face my stupidity. :D

So what are you driving if I may ask?

I will definitely be going to look, and would love to have Kermit on display, but he is in a very disappointing state. I think he would turn red with shame (or I would, at least  :-[ ).

Canberra is 14th October.
For Sydney and Canberra, anyone can go but only members can display.  Canberra's is at Ronds Terrace or Ronds Point, same diff'.  It's amazing seeing pristine examples of a car you own let alone the scores of other models you wouldn't mind owning.
