Title: 'Twas not a 6.9 after all...
Post by: Grant V on 02 April 2007, 03:35 AM
Gents,
There was an earlier thread where S-Class and I went off into the wild yonder in a search of an elusive 6.9. There were pics posted earlier of the engine, but at that stage we couldn't get access to the body.
I saw the body on Saturday and it turns out not to be a 6.9 after all. The chassis plate was missing, as were the bootlid badges, but I could make from the dirt around the badges that it was a "450SE 6.9". The car is a right-hand-drive and has steel springs throughout and you can quite easily see from the back door that its a normal SWB. Interestingly enough, the wood on the cubby lid is burl walnut with a neat little AMG badge on it.
So...a sigh of relief that this was not another poor 6.9 going to dust.

Grant, thanks for the forensic work.  When you phoned on Saturday I was both disappointed and relieved that it's not a 6.9.  If it were a 6.9 I would have felt some ethical responsibility to try and save it.  It raises the question though of where the engine came from?

Thanks

I remember the guy saying that the engine arrived seperately, so either it had been taken out and someone had done an earlier conversion, or there was a conversion planned.....
It would be nice to get that engine, polish it up and display it in the living room next to the Royal Dalton. Dunno if I have the balls to suggest it, though.

I was letting my imagination run a bit - is it remotely possible that this car was a special from AMG - you know a customer with lots of cash wanted a 6.9 in a SWB?

So the next leap of imagination is that whether that engine has any mods like AMG cams?  Would there be any way to trace that from the engine number - which is visible in the photos I posted?

If it has AMG goodies, I would be very keen to buy the engine - for the cylinder heads, cams etc.

It would look good in the living room, but better in a car....
