hi all,

Just purchased a 1979 300SD; it's in good condition, just needs some bodywork and some steering work. i've owned W126's for the past 12 years but this is my first W116 (totally diggin it, love this body style more than the W126).

It's nice to see another 300SD owner here! I had to replace the steering box and rebuild the pump on mine. Now that I have two years of daily use on it, I'm thinking it would be nice to replace the tie rods, center link, and damper as well. Having tight steering makes all the difference when it comes to drivability.

Since your 300SD is a 1979, you're lucky enough to have the manifolds without the EGR valve. My 1980 has an EGR and I plan on swapping out the manifolds for the old type when I rebuild the turbo and increase the boost.

Welcome to the best forum I've ever had the pleasure of being part of!
From one 300SD owner to another (mine is an '80)!

Just to be accurate, some 1980 examples did not have EGR.  I had two with no EGR.

Some 1980s have EGRs, some don't. I think it's safe to say that a 1979 wouldn't have an EGR valve.

thanks for all the replies!
i think mine needs the steering coupler replaced; it sounds just like the one in one of the threads i found on here that has a video with it. the tie rods and upper/lower ball joints are good on mine though. haven't have time to thoroughly check everthing out yet (probably won't till beginning of the new year)
yeah my 79 does not have an EGR valve. i was fortunate enough to find a non-EGR manifold at the JY a few years back and put that one on my 83 W126 SD, but you could just cut up a coke can and make a block off plate (i just had too much time on my hands at that time, lol). thanks again for the warm welcome, this seems like a very good and active forum
