Dear All,

I'm the new happy owner of a Mercedes-Benz 350 SE (or SEL?) automatic from January 1976. The car is euro spec and spent her whole life here in Switzerland.

192500km and a global good shape. Dark Blue and sand leather interior.

Swiss documents of the car state that it's a SEL version but i'm not sure. How can I know avoiding the most simply way by only measuring the car? If i'm not wrong it should be 4mt95 for the SE and 5m05 for the SEL. Other differences that may can help me?

I also know that late 1975 Mercedes changed the old D Jetronic for the new K Jetronic. My car was born on 14.01.1976. so I'm not sure that has been already equipped with the new injection system. Do you have any idea about hot to check?

Thanks.

Camillo

Congrats on joining the W116 owners gang. Can we see some pics? :)

The best way to tell if it's a SEL or SE, without measuring, is by the chassis number. If it starts with 116028 then you have a 350SE, if it starts with 116029, it's an SEL. If you have a 350SEL, you can feel special - there were only 4266 of this version ever made. Sure, it's only a longer version of the standard 350SE, but still :)

This post will help you figure out if it's a D-Jet or a K-Jet, but I'd expect it to be a K-Jet: http://forum.w116.org/mechanicals/injection-type-identification-d-versus-k-jet/

Hi Camillo

As ptashek says, the easiest way to check if you have the long wheel base is to look at the numbers stamped on the fire wall or build plate.

116 028 = SWB
116 029 = LWB
Look at the build plate in front of the radiator.  You're interested in the second line that starts 116... (in my case a 450SE)

Or look at the number stamped on the firewall

In general, a very easy way to distinguish V8 d-jets and k-jet is looking at the air cleaner.  If its round its a d-jet, if its a 'D' shape, its a k-jet.

Hope this helps

Gavin

P.S.  If you take a photo of the build plate I can decode the options for you.

P.P.S.  The method of using the air cleaner is not so easy to apply to a 280, but in general an lozenge shaped air cleaner implies its carburetted or k-jet depending on the orientation of the air cleaner, over the cam cover or parallel to the cam cover respectively.  The d-jets have a barrel type air cleaner sitting to the lower right of the engine as you stand in front of the car looking into the engine bay.

Hey Camillo,

are you the same Camillo who wrote an email to me, Luca, because Lorenzo Savi suggest?

If yes, welcome here!

Gavin wrote usueful suggest to you to check the version: in addition, I can only suggest to enter in your car by the passenger side and check in the lower side - below the dash and beyond the door frame - by opening the panel with an air grill and see if the ECU appears: this is the 100% ensure your car is a D-Jet!  ;D
