Caveat Emptor -sourcing rebuilt parts

After chasing what we thought was an oil leak dripping off the oil filter housing, it was actually the high pressure pump.  The leak had to get bad enough to see it. I bought that pump from SPOB in Germany and it has about 20,000 miles on it.  It was advertised as rebuilt by SPOB.  Martin tore it down and discovered a gap extrusion leak.  He also discovered the the bronze bearings are very worn.  Comparing to my original pump which I sent in case he needed to scavenge parts from that one, Martin says the original pump with 200,000 miles on it has much better bearings.

Perhaps only an expert like Martin can spot things like worn bearings, but with the leak that was probably present from the time I installed the pump, my bet is that SPOE just sold me a used, un-rebuilt pump.  At least it's the version that isn't prone to housing cracks like my original.  Sigh.

post script: Martin just micced the bearings.  They are the wrong ID, not worn.  Pump was rebuilt, but not well.
