Roof gutter rubber

The rubber where the roof gutter meets the A-pillar in my car is looking worn and I am thinking of replacing it along with the other door rubbers. Does anyone now the part number? Is changing the roof gutter rubber a big job? Could I do it?

The only two rubbers that I know on the A-Pillar are the windscreen rubber abd the door rubber.

The front door rubber that wraps around the front of the window frame part as far as I know is part of the door rubber.

The front Gutter trim on the A-pillar on my car seems to have some rubber packing/mastic under it but this wouldn't be visible with trim in situ and could be replaced with windscreen mastic filler (As I will be doing when I replace mine).

are you talking about that rubber bit in front of the mirror where the chrome and colour coded piece join the bonnet?
if so, i bought the passenger one 116 698 01 98 for 39 bucks (Au) in 2002.  when you put this on, you can replace the foam under that A pillar chrome/body piece (116 698 07 98) which was only $4 similarly

I think I'll need to show on a photo but the rubber I am referring to is at the top of the A-pillar which covers the roof drain that flows from the roof gutter and behind the A-pillar.

A photo would be good.  Like the rubber bit behind the rad grill that I never knew existed, I think I've just discovered another rubber bit missing.  Bummer.

I am a little confused here too. :(

Here are some photos of what I am talking about.

Location shot:

Good roof gutter rubber:

Damaged roof gutter rubber:

Does this make it clear (click on the thumbnails for larger images)? You should be able to see how the good roof gutter rubber tapers down behind the A-pillar while the bad rubber ends abruptly before tapering.

I think I dont have any such rubber. could that be a sealant applied by the previous owner.
Have to take a look at mine when I get home.

Mforcer's car has been in the family since day dot so it shouldn't be too hard to find out :)  But looking at those photos, mine looks the same in that there's a rise before the channel goes down the A pillar.  It would seem some water could get trapped there. But mines all white and I'm not to sure it's rubber but more a factory sealant like what you see around the inside of doors on modern cars.  The sealant will be colour coded and look like a long bead, and you can put a thumbnail in it and make an indent.  I shall go get a photo.

It's too dark to get a good focus so I'll take pics of both cars tomorrow so you can compare.

My car is apart at the moment and I can photograph the parts if you want.?

When I removed those panels there was a perished foam gasket and sealant along the leading edge - ?Are you looking at the sealant bead.

Is that rust around the sunroof?

Mine had a couple of bubbles here but didn't go right through the metal when I cleaned it up.

I have photographed the parts and here they are

This is the bare pillar with trim removed showing the  self tapped holes in the pillar

Here are both sides of the trim showing the chrome pieces which are fixed by  screws on each pillar which are surmounted by plastic fittings that both hold the chrome piece and also allow the painted escutcheon to be slid into it - removal is shown in the Manual.

Close up view of the same showing the hard rubber gasket on the back of the chrome trim and the rubber cap that sits on the end - one is missing on my car.

Hope this helps.

That rubber gasket looks like it. I'll look up the manual and see what I can do. Does anyone know if that rubber has a separate part number?

And my roof did have rust. I think the photo is just showing affects of the image compression :-\

Just how do you get the body colour pieces out of the A pillar trim?

My paper manual says prise at the top for (very) early models or at the bottom for all others.

Now I poked in pointy wedges and levered as much as I dare but can't get either out.

Is there a secret?

Hi Styria,

I accept the wisdom of new rubbers and not using Mastic.

What price are second hand chrome A-Pillar pieces?

I was going to steady myself (With Zimmer Frame and Black Label) and ask at Diesels when the paint was a little further on. ;D
