hydro line mystery

I found the line from rear valve to rr strut had zero fluid flow. Found out that there is a rod inside the tube. I was going to make a new line, but now am confused whats going on. Why is the tube like this.

Ps anyone have a spare around?

Hmmm that's odd for sure ::)   almost like a baffle or choke of sorts?  Do you think that rod inside the line runs the entire length of the line?

Looks like entire length.

Hmm, quite odd... If I remember correctly there should be a plastic baffle kinda thing in the rubber hose going to the struts (it was discussed here a while ago), but I don't understand why it should be in the hardline. I can't rememeber how our lines looked like in the inside when we replaced them.

Would you say the line you cut was original?  The original lines as I'm sure you know had an olive green type colour to them.  I can't tell from your pic but maybe this line was already a replacement?  This is very intriguing...Inspector rumb will have to follow the leads of the case ;D

Original lines are olive green and current MB lines are black. The line in the pic looks cad plated. Maybe the plater forgot to remove the rod?

I replated this and other original lines.

The rod is likewise bent inside all the curves of this tube.

I  think I will just find some similar sized materials and make a new one with the rod inside.  Straighten the donor tube, push a rod inside and then bend.

We will never learn why it is there, but the engineers had a reason.

It's still very odd to me that the line is essentially fully choked.  Should you not want rapid, unimpeded fluid flow to have more rapid response in suspension movements?

Found this post on Benzworld, man this is puzzling...

In the WIS is a remark that they changed the line to reduce swaying.
It would make sense to reduce the flow for the line that goes to the Regulator because with only 1 regulator for each axle if the car goes down on the outside of a curve the inside strut gets pushed up by the pressure from the outside strut as they are both connected, making the car lean more ,i think by reducing the flow they maybe tried to mitigate the effect.
Because of this issue the 6.9 also has bigger sway bars , but compared to a regular w116 you can still feel this effect at least in my opinion.

Interesting for sure.  Can you maybe post the section of the WIS here?  There must have been a break in production I guess whereafter the change was made.

It is section 32 , there is just a change for the front strut line mentioned but think that maybe the rear line had this change done from the start.

I have read section 32 of my workshop manual but I see no reference to this change that was made.  I think I have an older version of the workshop manual which does not have this revision. Does it state in your manual when this change was made?  Usually they would have stated a month/year or VIN/chassis number split for the change.

I attached a Screenshot from the section , but it is in german.

Ok great thanks I can figure most of it out and I'll Google translate as well.
Cheers

Here is the English translation, courtesy of Google, perhaps here and there something might have gotten lost in translation 8)
