scroll down to the pictures of the centre consol, whats the additional wood surround and knob for, I've never seen this on an australian W116

The dial is for the old German traffic radio. You could tune to the channel for the locale where you were driving and you would be notified of any congestion or road problems. Pretty sophisticated stuff for the 1970s!

Good find and nice pics.  It's interesting to note that some 2005 VW vans I drive at work have a "news" mode on one of the multifunction buttons on the cd head unit.  From memory, the manual said something about traffic news.

I thought that was a cool gadgety feature in this day and age let alone being around in the '70s.  Surely there must have been other cars that utilised a presumably free traffic radio broadcast too.

Anyone know if this is a European phenomenon or strictly German?
