I recall reading about the difference in the bearing somewhere yes.  If you think about it it's only an HPF pump because it's stamped "HPF" on the cover and technically a cover could have been swapped over the years albeit unlikely.
I would go with the rebuild option as long as they are competent of course which it sounds like they are.

Mechanicals / Difference between SLS and HPF...
Last post by BMA - Today at 01:49 PM
Hello 6.9 enthusiasts,

my HPF pump is definitely broken. I've currently fitted a loaner pump and the car drives incredibly well; my pump seems to have died a slow death. At some point, Mercedes listed both pump variants – HPF and SLS – under a single part number, which must mean that there are no longer any differences between them. Does anyone know from which timepoint on, the part number became the same?

I don't think my pump is an HPF pump because there's no HPF engraving on it.
Mr Woltering, who runs a specialist workshop for classic Mercedes, explained to me today that the only difference between the two pump variants was the reinforced bearing assembly on the HPF pumps, and that if my pump is an SLS pump, it doesn't matter because he would fit new bearings anyway, making it suitable for the 6.9-litre engine.
Is that correct? Or are there actually some significant differences, and would I definitely need to use a pump with an HPF engraving? Here is the link to the workshop in Germany – their measurement technology is really impressive!

I intend do ship my broken pump to them for repair or what would you guys do?

Best regards,

I had the AC re-filling done today, incl. new dryer.
285 g R134 were recovered after appr. 12 years.
The guy told me that a loss of appr. 10 % per year by permeation can be expected.
Given an initial filling of around 1100 g, 285 g seem good.

Different experiences?

On my 6.9 it says 1.0 kg max for R12.  Not sure if it's different for R134 though.

Did you also change the expansion valve when you did the work on your system?

Mechanicals / Filling amount R134 for a 6.9
Last post by BCK1963 - 06 June 2026, 04:19 PM
Hello,

it is quite a while ago that I posted here, but don't worry, I am following the discussions permanently  ;) .

I will have my AC on my 6.9 refilled next week. The refrigerant is R134. An old thread said that 1050 g are needed. Can you confirm that? I think on a diferent occasion I read about 1200 g.

I changed the system to R134 myself appr. 10 years ago. When digging into the topic I got recommendations from 'just fill in new oil and R 134'  to  'the entire system must be drained, cleaned, etc.
I digged deep into the matter and assumed that in fact adding new oil and R134 should not harm the system. The old and the new oil don't mix and the R134 acts together with the new oil. The old oil will float through the system without duty.
I did so and the system has been working flawless since then.
Since the cooling efficiency appears to have diminished a bit with the years I will have an update done with exchange of the dryer.
