Title: ------==== W116.Org STICKERS ====-------
Post by: SELfor50 on 12 November 2007, 05:45 AM
Sorry had to use the banner style...

Admin, anyone - what are the chances of exploring the possibilities of "W116.Org" Stickers?!

I know it would get even more people here.  Lately around canberra i've been seeing a few more 116's than average.  They've been coming out of the woodwork.

I know if I had a w116.org sticker plastered across the back of my windscreen (not too big of course) other 116 drivers would go.. hey, that's the model I have, i'm gonna check out that site.

Most enthusiasts only stumble across this site when they are looking for assistance with mechanical issues etc.  Would be good to get people coming here just for the fact they own such a bloody great vehicle!  That make sense?

Anyway, I sorta asked this before to do with the Team W116 thing, but I reckon if we at least got something general made up then everyone (well everyone who doesn't mind sticking something on their windscreen) could plaster one up.

Thoughts, suggestions, criticism?? ???

I used to make my own,

I work with $120,000 printers, and have a $45,000 colour networked mfp w/fiery for my home office :D

Send me a design + desired laser friendly plastic labels upto A3 Wide and ill print them for free.

I know of some friends' Toyotas, Hyundais and Holdens I'd like to put them on.  Can we make them offensive  ;D

I wouldn't mind a sticker or two.  A transparent badge type sticker or something new.  Gotta have a teamw116 one too.

I think thats a great idea. I think it would be cool if we did something like a contest to come up with a cool design. Since Patrick has such a sweet machine at his disposal, we should really look into it.

Actually, I was only having a bit of fun with you, and your idea is not that bad, however I think that you need to have the graphic of the car on it. There are two types of W116 drivers IMO. The ones like us that are enthusiasts/collectors, and then there is the others that drive them, but have no idea it is a W116.

Why not use the grille badge design?

has the web address included.

1.  Make them magnetic or the thin film that can be installed and peeled without glue to glass.

2.  Incorporate this car:

Circle the logo?  "International Mercedes W116 S-Class" (top half)
                       "Enthusiasts Group"

Dope suggestions y'all!!

Keep em comin'!!!

Michel's right on the money - it needs to be something that can be read at a 'fair' distance by people, but also incorporate the car silhouette as like craig said - some people just drive a mercedes, that's all they know.

Neat design Oscar. I particulary like the spiral in the headlight. The seventies were, after all, the decade when real acid users got down & dirty.

I reckon that any sticker has to be good to look at as well as convey the information clearly. That's what interesting design is all about. Simple words, although they are appealing for simplicity, lack the class associated with these cars. They deserve the best we can muster.

PB - are you able to print a 3D style sticker with chrome finish & font that resembles the left side boot badge?

I reckon that could be cool  ;D

I would have that, with say a copy of the grille badge on each side of the web address.

I would love to run a sticker! How about something like the benzworld.org sticker? or something like the website logo?
Title: Re: ------==== W116.Org STICKERS ====-------
Post by: OzBenzHead on 14 November 2007, 09:10 PM
I'm not at all big on stickering my cars.

That said, something with the legible and elegant simplicity of the benzworld.org sticker would find a place on my car/s.   Anything that is not immediately legible at a reasonable distance is a waste of glass area IMO.

I back Michel's suggestion.

Could there be a spelling mistake or typo here?
Could it be Klassiker nicht Plastik - I hasten to add that I don't know....

Do you mean 'nicht'?

It translated for me as "S-Class: Classical author not plastic"

'Author'?
Title: Re: ------==== W116.Org STICKERS ====-------
Post by: CraigS on 26 November 2007, 02:30 AM
It means "Classic not Plastic". Whether it should be "Plastik" rather than kunststoff however is another question !

I like the kunststoff part....you can make it sound dirty!!   ;D

Cam:  I like the wording, but three matters:

1.  The tag line is too small to read from much farther away than the rear bumper - it could be enlarged enough to fill the width of the sticker and that would make it far more reader-friendly. (Don't want other motorists running up our bumpers trying to read it, do we?   :D  )

2.  I think the stencil typeface is more appropriate to something "butch" or country'n'western; it doesn't - to my eye - say "German quality" or "good taste".  This is, of course, an utterly subjective observation. The cleaner, clearer, less "busy" the typeface the more instantly readable it would be.

3.  Whilst I appreciate the German tag line (including the possibility of its making people look twice when when they think they've spied a "dirty" word), would enough people get it to compensate for its cleverness, or would an English tag give greater utility?

Perhaps

or

It was difficult enough for those here to translate it, so how is the GP going to figure it out ?

I don't think you need the "S-Class" either. Just makes it un-needlessly "busy".

Ok.....

Feedback taken on board.

I'm leaning towards "S-Klasse: Klassiker nicht Plastik"

Remember, we're not aiming towards the general public.  You see the stickers in english on other cars that say "Classic not Plastic".  If someone can't figure out that Klassiker nicht Plastik means that then they're definately not observant enough to appreciate the vehicle.

Tell ya what.   If we can vote on 2 different prints (being that Klassiker nicht Plastik is already one of them  ;D ) then i'll get them both made up and y'all can see what comes out better.

Gordon, great call on the font - I just thought i'd throw it out there with something different.  But it should definitely be printed in a plain-ish font so it's easier to read.

:)

I'm just a font freak - have more than 11,000 of them on the Mac last time I checked. They are the basic tools of my living.

Here's another variant.

Don't get too enamoured of it, Andrew.

A former b/f of mine love to spoonerise, and was always practising some smart-alec thing to say.

Then, one day as he was driving his smokey old Beetle around Adelaide, he was pulled over by a copper.

Too eager to please, and putting mouth into gear before engaging brain, Marcus leapt out of the car and greeted the copper with:

"Good afternoonstable c... ".

VERY large fine - and VW grounded as terminally unroadworthy!   ;D ;D ;D ;D

I've been granted what appears to be a 'provisional' approval to print some stickers.

There's shyte all $$$ outlay so it's not really a major issue.  Obviously i'm not gonna be profiteering off these so i'd assume there's no issue there.

Like I said, if we can nut out 2 designs - i'll get the print done and we can see how they come out.

I wouldn't get too excited about this sticker..

ADMIN obviously doesn't approve (deafening silence from that end)  ::)

Posting a topic with a question for Admin is NOT the way to get Admin's attention. No one should assume Admin is reading any topic, let alone every topic. ::)

Admin has responded in the positive to a PM on this subject. Admin likes the work done to date and will be interested in obtaining some stickers too. Admin wants to see what ideas others can come up with.

Ok... back to the top.

I have actually organised to speak to the printer in the coming weeks, as I'll be having quite a few stickers printed up in vinyl so that I can plaster my car for it's 1st event.

Y'all decide on a definitive / final design and i'll get them made.

I'm perfectly happy for others to make up the file for the sticker printer; if I remember correctly, the layout was originally Cam / SELfor50's - I just changed the fonts for something plainer and easier to read at a distance and in smaller sizes.

However, whether Cam, or I, or someone else produces the print file for the printer, that person will need to know the following details, some of which depend entirely upon the printer's own technical requirements.

Some of the following specs will probably make sense only to a printer.

* Desired final size in mm (i.e. trimmed, ready for placing on car).

* Bleed marks required? (Additional to crop marks which obviously will be required.)  If bleed marks, how much bleed required?

* Crop marks: traditional corner-only crosshair marks or full perimeter border.

* Required file type, e.g. tif, jpg, png, pdf ... etc.

* File resolution in dpi (dots per inch); 300 is common and perhaps adequate to our purpose, but any resolution from 150 dpi(likely absolute minimum) to 2400 dpi is possible (beyond 2400 the file size gets ridiculous and therefore harder to transmit).

* Colour of text (defined - if other than white - preferably in Pantone or similar colour-model style).

* Background (as I understand, it is to be clear, but I could be wrong or that could change): if coloured - other than clear or black - defined as Pantone etc. - and how does the printer need it presented in the print file: white, black, clear ... ?

* Text colour: does the printer require it in its desired finished colour, or as black (or other)?

NOTE: Mustn't forget to convert all text to vectors / outlines before finalising the file for delivery to the printer, otherwise the fonts could go awol (if, e.g. the printer doesn't have them resident on his machinery) and not turn out how required.

I think that should cover it for a trouble-free run.

Post by: SELfor50 on 02 February 2008, 03:40 AM
Thanks for that Gordon.

I got no idea about any of the above.  I'll be talking to the printer later this week and finding out exactly what's required....but i'd assume the requirements are same as above.

Mavric's already mailed me the sizes he wants for the front windscreen of Team 116 - Car 2.

Everyone else drop your suggestions etc here, and I don't mind who makes the file for the printer, I don't have the skills - so nominations open!
