Hi Tim, research so far indicates a head unit with 16 watts RMS is the standard car stereo power pack and would suit speakers with sensitivity of around 90-91db/W/M and above that in RMS they recommend lower sensitivity speakers which range from 89 down to 84db/W/M. My research suggest 88db/W/M would be good for a head unit at 23watts RMS which is what the Clarion pushes out (50 per channel max through a Mossfet amp or something like that). Plenty of info out there but will spend some time at Alberts HiFi and listen to the sound board at the end of the day.

The head unit has some meaty cables for an external amp but will sort out with the sound professionals when i learn the language of stereos and can understand what they are waffling about  ;D

Will take on board the rare earth magnets bits, here is a piece of info, 98% of rare earths are located in China apparently, don't the Japanese and Americans love that prospect  :D when its an essential ingredient for those hybrid cars...

Hows your progress on the W201 plodding along?

That's some useful research. Ultimately, a lot of thought can go into this sort of thing and the lower sensitivity speakers can offer a more balanced sound in this situation. It all depends on what you want to achieve, and as you say it's a good idea to listen to the various options. I'll probably chill out now, so as to not bore people with audio info. 8)

China is producing that percentage of rare earths, however I believe there is plenty of scope for exploration/mining elswhere, it just hasn't so much been exploited yet. 8)

I've started the engine reassembly with the 201, but I'm taking my time with it. I should have it finished early in the new year though.

I just need four main bearing kits and that's about it. The pistons are ready to go in as you saw, and the crank seals are already pressed in. I do need other parts though, such as a water pump before I can run the engine though.

@MT.

Yep, I'm taking lots of photos, and I'll compile a pictorial at the end. Likewise with the upcoming efforts on the 6.9.

I also look forward to the pics of the M100 project, Cam.

Hahah... soon-ish guys, soon-ish.  Not much has happened since stripping it down, but work will begin in the new year.

I have squeezed in some W116 time.

On the 280SE, I removed the front disks/hubs to have them skimmed, and I refitted with repacked wheel bearings and new oil seals.  Last night I did an engine oil change.

This weekend its new rear disks, new fuel pump and filter, new engine and tranny mounts.  If time allows, hopefully a new timing chain too.  I have new rear Bilsteins on order, that should arrive next week.

Sounds like a very worthwhile set of jobs S class.

I will be home from Singapore tonight and will be getting a start on my rear end 6.9 rebuild ASAP.

I have almost decided to begin the epic task of preparing for the 6.9's paint job... I may need some encouragement though. ;)

Thanks Bill.  The car is my daily driver, and this is the one time of the year that I devote effort to it - basically I have to get it sorted for the next year ahead.
