Title: Online Concours?
Post by: Brian Crump on 13 August 2007, 06:31 AM
OK 116ers,
Here is the chance to vote on an online Concours.
Details need to be worked out - such as, classes, judging etc.
If the idea has legs, I envisage it running along the lines of; email your best 4 or 5 photos taken in the last month before the closing date and we get a judge to award class wins. Eg: Best engine bay, best interior, best modified, best body  - (No digital enhancement allowed :o)  - best restoration, best windscreen rubber, best dashpad - the list is endless..... ;D wmv files for best exhaust sound?
Obvioulsy this is just the planning stage so post yr ideas - enough classes and we can ALL win!!
This would be an International Concours - carrying all the prestige of Pebble Beach without the cost.  ;)
Voting is open for 14 days only. Ends on 27th August 2007.
If there is interest, I'll organise it - if not, well, I'll.....dunno!!
Regards,
BC

What a fabulous idea!

Plus great motivation for all of us to take extremely good photographs of our cars.

We need a paypal link on this site for all the wonderful 116 merchandise we will eventually have anyway!

(hats, badges, shirts etc etc etc) and if we all chip in a couple of dollars we might have a nice certificate in each category?

(personally, I think to be fair, a "brown car only" category would keep us from sweeping the concours)

It sounds like a great idea BC, I say go for it! I can't imagine I'd win any class at all, but it would be fun and interesting none the less!  ;D

Hmm...about 542,000Kms now. That's a rounded off figure, but all I need to do is peak at the odometer  ;D

Good heavens NO!!!!
The aim is for you to send in ideas for rules, regulations, categories etc so that I can draw up a proposal to post here for all to see. Of course, you may add to the proposal and suggest changes.
This is democracy in action.
I will be advised by the collective wisdom of the forum members.  ;D

Edit; All complaints are to be sent to Mr G De Klerk.

Should there be some kind of entry form?
I guess photo wise there should be engine, boot, interior from all 4 doors. info (apx build year, options, colour code)
Classes: Concourse, Road, Modified, Unrestored

Just a couple of ideas..

I'm keen to participate as long as it doesn't become onerous.  So I suggest only one competition per month or even every 2 months.

Categories could include :

a) paint - closeup shots needed
b) interior - likewise closeups
c) woodwork
d) wheels
e) engine bay
f) brightwork

In each case points would be awarded for originality, and condition.

Further to the above, I think we would need to focus on one particular aspect of a cer for each competition rather than whole cars, beause of the limitations of judging from photos rather than seeing the car in person.

For each competition, there could be two categories :

a) daily or regular drivers
b) garage queens

Who has garage queens ?
Title: Re: Online Concours?

Perhaps garage queen is abit of an extreme term - we could make it :

a) daily drivers
b) 'sunday only' cars.

I think quite a lot of us have cars that would fall in category b)

Mine's a daily, but I do try to keep an eye on her. I'm very keen on this idea!

Well....when you take photos, the 690SEL badge will be there, mod's could cover from a Ute conversion to a very tidy set of alloy wheels. Personally you dont see alot of RED w116's and thats a shame, one of the few cars that it would suit.

Ok here are some stats:
499 members of the 116 forum.
20 responses to the question of an online Concours.
Maybe some of the members died before they ever got around to posting?  ;D

I'll get the rules and regs up in the next couple of days.

Title: Re: Online Concours?

Well, I like that idea and especially if it's a yearly event, although it's gonna take some digging to see all the good stuff that's come up retrospectively and there should be some stiff competition, it'd be great to see what nominations from long forgotten threads reveal.  So whilst some categories I'd imagine would focus on cars, best resto, best presented, best mods etc, there should be some categories concentrating on the forum. Eg, ranging from the most informative thread, best advice or innovation to the post or thread that made us laugh the hardest.

OK folks,
Here is my suggestion for the online Concours....
To enter you need to be a forum member and it must be your car.

Classes.
The best looking in each of the following;
Class 1. 116-280 (280S, 280SE, 280SEL)
Class 2. 116-350 (350SE, 350SEL0
Class 3. 116-450 (450SE, 450SEL)
Class 4. 116-450SEL 6.9
up to 5 photos taken in the last month showing your car to its best.

The following Classes are open to any 116.
Class 5. Engine Bay.
Class 6. Interior upholstery, dash, instruments.
Class 7. Boot compartment including tool kit and spare wheel.
Up to 5 photos taken in the last month showing your car to its best.

The following distance classes are open to any 116.
Class 8. Lowest mileage. Verified by a photo of your odometer.
Class 9. Highest mileage. Verified by a photo of your odometer.

The following classes are open to any 116.
Class 10. Best modified 116.
Class 11. Best original 116.
Up to 5 photos showing your car to its best

The following is open to any 116.
Class 12. Best sound file of your engine/exhaust. Not modified.
Class 13. Best sound file of your engine/exhaust. Modified.
Class 14. Best humourous pic.
Class 16. Most improved 116. Pics of your project from a year ago and pics from today.

It's a chance to show each other our cars/

Suggestions?
I propose I set a closing date for entries. Admin has offered to judge. Will the gallery be large enough to host the photos of all contestants, Admin? If not, is there another way to do it, such as email in your pics with a selection from each person's entry being posted n the site?
Over to the forum. Pick apart the idea and add/subtract classes. The Concours Director will make the final decision for the format based on your suggestions.
Regards,
BC

It's only just begun now this online concours is a goer.  Your baby's gonna keep you awake for hours every night sorting thru the entries. :D
Nice going BC, I like the classes.  I agree setting a closing date is the go.

My suggestion;
As far as submissions are concerned, how about - details and photos are emailed to Mforcer (if he agress) or the convenor (you) then thrown into a locked thread so all that anyone can do is look, read the class entered into and enjoy the images.  That way, no interrupting posts or opinions by people like me  ::) will derail the thread and entries are kept in one spot.

I second my own suggestion ;D
