Title: Melbourne and Vic meet...
Post by: koan on 29 July 2011, 09:12 AM
Does any one in Melbourne or Victoria (or further afield) feel like a winter meet?

Nothing special, just meet up in park somewhere for some none-http based interaction.

Think we tried this once before, of the three men and the dog who said they turn up only the dog made it.

When I had a finnie I found out that the small circle of afficianados diminished until there were almost none. Fast forward.  Looking for a replacement, I skipped the NG and went straight to a W116. Why? - No rear swing arms to get out of alignment, a/c, ps etc on almost all examples, same space as a finnie, good performance, handling, ride, steering, brakes, and lots of protection if things get out of hand. So here I am, re-living the finnie experience, pretending to ignore the sideway glances, smiling when I drive my W116, and like most W116 owners, still looking for a better one.

I live in Melbourne, and although I don't like dogs (I try to run over them, and cats, too), I am curious to meet someone who thinks Joyce Barnaby is hot. I'd be interested to learn more about 6.9s, too.  There is a nice park called Hayes' Paddock with lots of parking space off Kilby Road. When I get over this lurgie that gives me time to write stuff like this.

I think it was meant to be a magnificent 7, but we ended up a pretty good 6. So who are these dudes, are you thinking, eh? Well, just a collection of enthusiasts who probably have little in common other than an affection for the magnificent (there's that word again) W116. Never seen three light-blue metallic 6.9s with parchment interiors together before. And Carl's award winning 280SE: so good it makes your eyes water.  Have a standard now for my yellow 280SE - still to be named (see gallery).  And J's 6.9 has done 1m kms. A magnificent (three times now, that word) thing. Beat that!

7th or 14th is good for me. I still have Wernher (von Braun), complete, entire, intact, unsold.  Or there is the new, younger mistress in W140 guise, the interloper, with the Bose/Eurovox 11 speaker system that plays audible music and it doesn't need a tanker following (holds 100 litres).  But it might be the taxi that few have seen.  I call it the taxi because it is taxi yellow, and just to illustrate how authentic is the colour,  this chick tapped on the window while I was waiting the lights and asked in a pommy accent if I was engaged, and I said "sorry lady you're much too late: I'm married".  Her face was a treat to observe - would've put Joyce Barnaby to shame, Koan.

Wouldn't mind seeing those three blue 6.9s together again.  Is Melbourne the centre of the universe? - sometimes it feels like it.

Uh, you could be right, Major Tom, coz last time we met (winter solstice, near enough) it was in SWAN Street that we took such excellent coffee.  This time it'll be near the summer solstice and might be in SWAN Street again (no Banana or Crow Streets I know of here).  Sydney's pretty good, and the FC there (formerly South Melbourne) is called the SWANS.

Never been to Perth, so I have to rely on trustworthy opinion.  We were thinking of visiting Albany sometime in the W140, so is Perth worth the extra distance, then?

I reckon every city would be a ghost town if there were no work. :-X

But yes indeed, there wouldn't be much happening here if it wasn't for the resources sector. 8)

I love it though, I moved from Sydney which I thought was the biggest hole in the universe (in my opinion of course, and I was born there). I'd live in Melbourne if I was moving back to the East Coast for a hectic lifestyle.

If I was driving over to Albany, I'd do the loop back up to Perth and across to Kalgoorlie/Boulder. You've got to see the whole South West IMO, and if you're driving up to Perth you can cut across to Augusta/Margaret River so long as there aren't any fires... It's a stunning part of the world. 8)

OK guys, are we meeting, and if so, when? 7th may not be hot and the crowds will still be under canvass by the sea, a long, long distance away.  If we leave it to the 14th, we could find ourselves back in a hot cycle.

Koan,

It looks like you really have started something with our winter love-in last year - they seem to be doing it now in SA, Ol' Blighty, and elsewhere.  What have you started?

Also, as reported elsewhere, wonderous tho' the S420 is, it is not a W116.  I therefore need some encouragement to keep one (probably the 280SE, almost identical to Carl88's), persevere, work through all the issues, and spend the $s without flinching.

Yours in Joyce,

PG

Anyone up for a second Melbourne winter meeting? - it's almost a year, and Carl has two concours wins clocked up, some 6.9s have changed hands, and you don't see a 116 on the streets much any more.  I can give you a report on living with a W140 for close on a year, and explain in fine-grain detail why, superb tho' the 140 be, it ain't a 116.  If you have a good 116, keep it or sell it to me.  The 6.9 is a peerless icon, and really the pinnacle, but the others aren't too shabby.  I like the 350SE better than the 450SE, but the 280SE really surprised me.  Still trying to hang on to mine.  I liked but didn't love the 280S, but there are a few around with the manual tranny, and I think that I'd have one of them in an eye blink.

What do you think guys about a SECOND Melbourne winter meeting?

How about Saturday the 11th. or Sunday the 12th. August?  Plan would be to meet at the coffee shop in Richmond, say around 10am and tell lots of lies and bullshit, does that work?  The we can head to the wshop if you want.  I will be doing car stuff, so I won't be able to spend 17 hours speaking shit!  But it's not problem to come back to the wshop for an hour or two if you wish.

It doesn't have to be Richmond BTW, it's just where we met last time, and it's close to me!

Any interest in a 2013 Melb winter meeting in - say - July?  Had a bad year in 2012, so I missed the concours, and now things have settled down I have some leisure time again.  350SE resto is finished and it has come up well, but is being sold; however I still have the wonderful 280SE (almost as good as Carl's).  The W140 is up for sale also as wifey doesn't like driving it - I have also had a lot of ignition problems in the last 6 months and I've just about had enough of that.  Small thing, I know, but it has annoyed the hell out of me.  It will be replaced by a C220CDI wagon that is coming in a few months.  Have tentative approval to keep the 280SE for which I nurture much affection.

Yours in Joyce, etc,

PG
