Well, I did a search and found that there was a grill badge for the W116.org around 2007. Are these still available? Since you guys have been the best help out there I would like to promote the site/club on my grill.
Robert
I think it was a one off thing done at the time and are NLA, from what I read. I saw another member some months ago asking about these since his had fallen off or broken or some such thing. Don't remember who it was.
I'd be interested in one as well. Perhaps a member has extras? Hard to say if they would want to part with them if they are NLA, though :)
I wonder if a company like Cafe Press or similar could make these for the site so the ORG wouldn't have the overhead of having to purchase a lot of them. IIRC, companies like Cafe Press simply print/press out items on a demand basis.
Adam
From memory, there was a minimum order for about 30 which was mostly pre-sold at the time. They have all since been sold.
If there is enough interest I would be happy to organise another run of badges.
Might as well start...Two for me...
I would consider one.. what was the cost.. and can some one post a pic...
Once I have an idea in my head it is very hard for me to stop thinking about it until I do something about it. So last night I started searching vintage grill badges. There are some very interesting and beautiful ones out there. Since I am a simple man I have always thought that less is more. That being said two badges caught my eye, the German (Deutschland) and the ADAC badge with the eagle or whatever the animal is (looks like a dragon to me). Anyway it looks great so I decided that using a similar eagle but with the W116 added to it and I came up with this:
(http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/9811/scannedimage110690000.th.jpg) (http://img189.imageshack.us/i/scannedimage110690000.jpg/)
Now since I am not computer savvy I would have like it to have a Germanic font (but readable). Anyway I was thinking that one could also replace the years at the bottom with the milage achievements 100,000, 150000, 200,000, 250,000, etc.
So what do you think?

Below is what they looked like. I think about $25-30 AUD each from memory. Another design is a good idea. Something different, maybe something comemorative too later on for the 40th anniversary for the commencement of production but we're still a little way off for that. There were about 20 different variations to get to that badge below, but I'd love to see some other ideas. Don't mind the eagle.
EDIT: There was actually 21 different designs before the final one was selected. You can view the rough designs and final design via the following 3 links in the gallery.

Anyone know for sure whether any of the badges pictured on Oscar's post are still available? I'd sure like to buy one if they're still for sale by someone.
Hemersam
Well, with Oscars permission you can have any of those made... I found a company in the US that asks for $200 for the mold then a minimum of 40 at $25 as always price drops with volume.
Robert
Oscar fancy designing a 40 years badge? I will be more than willing to give input! ;D
Mmm possibly, got plenty of time before that anniversary. Was the official release 72 opr 73?
It took ages to get to that final badge and a hell of a lot of time on the puter. I only managed to do it because I had a lot of time on my hands whilst we were building a house. Or rather the builders were building our house.
Also re permission and copyright etc, I would assume admin has full rights to those images. I hate legal talk and disclaimers but I assume I have previously or am happy to reliquish forthwith any rights to images produced by me for badges bearing the name W116.ORG.
Is forthwith a word even ::)
Hehehe... lawyers and their funny talk... Like you said; time we have, but maybe we can start with asking others to draw up ideas and slowly build up an archive then we poll and take the next step and so on...
I believe it was late 72... any historians care to enlighten us?
Robert
From memory Mforcer and several others put a lot of effort into those badges and teh design thread should still be in the back pages..
My 6.9 proudly displays one and from memory I have a spare floating around that I will put on my 450 that was advertised for "free" by an Eastern State ex-member after the "Schism" but I haven't seen it for a year or two.
I will have put it somewhere safe.
Bill
I would also like to have a W116.org grill badge. I think 20-30 AUD or USD is really very priceworthy. I mean it looks like a very beautiful badge. Very nifty to have all the chrome of our cars as bare shiny metal in the badge.
I wouldn't mind leaving the badge as it is. I like it. It's perfect.
I understand that this kind of project needs to be financed up front. One can always decide to order some more when the order is actually placed, for future members or those in doubt ;)
I'm willing to pay up front. Now the question is how many really want a badge and pay up front? I assume we need to come up at at least 30 pieces to order. Does the original mould and colour specs still exist? Does the original supplier still exist :)
Mforcer could you ask for a quote at the original supplier to see how prices really are today?
Best regards!
I have that very badge on my car and can boast that is the ONLY one in Brazil!
I am sure that whoever did the original mold still has it which will keep cost down (no mold cost) so at say $25 we have to order 30 minimum which I think it is doable... anyone out there know which company did it and can they send them an email to see if they can produce another run?
Robert
If there is to be a re-run, I'd be happy to make another purchase too.
Tim
Six so far... 24 to go...
Quote from: Stork on 11 March 2011, 07:42 AM
... anyone out there know which company did it and can they send them an email to see if they can produce another run?
That would be me. I'll investigate this week.
I spoke to the company that makes them here in the US, they told me that they keep the mold for around 2 years... So you might want to call them today! How long has it been since the order was placed?
I know it's a stretch, but aside from grill badges, hats or shirts could be made as well.
Cafe Press will do them on per order basis. Because of that, there could be multiple designs and it could be a way for the Org to support hosting fees.
I like the idea of tee-shirts and caps! As for the teeshirt whatever we choose I would do small print on top left of chest and a big print on the back. Cap I would do the badge on front and W116.org on the rear following the arch... Lets just make sure they are not the cheap caps!
Okay guys, still working out the size of the fonts but this is what I will be making for myself in the near future and anyone who wants one just let me know! It is drawn by hand so don't rag on my skills! but I have designed what I think would look good on the grill (at least in my mind) for a forty year badge with no affiliation to anyone just the W116 crowd.
(http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2006/scannedimage110700000.th.jpg) (http://img20.imageshack.us/i/scannedimage110700000.jpg/)
I'll take one - possibly two if I'm allowed to keep both W116s. Dammit, make that two- I'll take the risk, and to hell with parsimony!
I'll buy one, too.
Hemersam
Alright, that is 4 badges! (including mine)... I am still going through the art stage getting the correct size fonts once that is done and finalized then it takes around 45 days to make. Glad to know my design is liked by others! ;D
I will post a picture of the art design when they send it to me.
Robert
Not wishing to stir the pot, but I'm only interested in the original design. ;)
Tim
Tim I want one of those as well! No worries this is just something that I wanted to do and I think others might want one as well. I am going to do a run of 40 which does come out a bit higher so I will have to charge 30 USD plus shipping. I would like to order 100, but I really don't know how many people will want one. But that is why we have eBay!
Here is a picture of the art so far. Just a few touch ups to do on the eagle. I am moving the 4 over a bit, aligning the years (dash) with the tail and change of a more red color:
(http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/144/screenshot20110315at209.jpg) (http://img860.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20110315at209.jpg/)
Count me in for one!
Jeez guys this is a can of worms. The original design took months and months to tie down, and spanned a couple of threads totalling hundreds of posts.
That is why being the dictator with this badge is good... I am always willing to hear advice but it does not mean I have to take it ;D I am doing this for me and I figured others would want one as well. Anyone can do one it just take a bit of time and some money. At the end of the day if I sell them all I break even, and that is fine by me. What is most important to me is that people enjoy my creation and are happy with it. Who knows if more than 40 folks want one I will make another batch. Not only that but now I kind off like making these! I have a few other ideas but as they say baby steps, baby steps ;)

Have to agree. You put something out there and in the end it goes ahead or not. I love the image we came up with for the ORG's badge and as stated, many hours, posts and tweaking were undertaken to get there. It would've been so, so much easier to put the image forward and "say here it is, who wants one" but unfortunately there was nothing refined to start with and without the input and work done, we wouldn't have that image. So ultimately, not only was the process worth it but also needed.
I do hope the ORG's originals get a rerun at some stage for those that want one and missed out and I wouldn't mind seeing another ORG badge in the future for whatever reason or occasion. For an individual effort though, I'm pretty impressed so far stork. Your image is growing on me and when it comes to adding to a small collection of merc badges I think I'd like one of yours to add to it.
I bought two of the original badges at the time, one is on my red 6.9, the other is on my 280SE daily driver. It has done thousands of km there, and seen all weather. It has stood up to the elements very well, and I still regularly get people asking me about it.
Okay color is a better red, dates and dash have been centered, eagle has been cleaned up (but they missed thinning out one of the feathers) and the 4 was moved over a bit. The W was also rounded off a bit to flow with the curve of the badge.
Everything looks good to me apart from the feather and now the 0 seems like it should move left a bit so I asked them to do it.
Here is the newest jpeg:
(http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/5606/8arn00047a011.jpg) (http://img717.imageshack.us/i/8arn00047a011.jpg/)
0 has been moved over to the left a bit and the thick feather is now thin. I still think the number 2 should curve at the bottom maybe the top of the 7 should curve as well.
(http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5606/8arn00047a011.jpg) (http://img4.imageshack.us/i/8arn00047a011.jpg/)
whats the diamiter..?
Standard 3 inches, for now.
After seeing how the original W116.org) badge fit on the grill I decided to do some measurements so this way I can move the mounting hole down a bit. Once done the the badge can center itself between the chrome horizontals (these are 3 inches from bottom to top). So now when you put the badge on, it will fit perfectly.
Robert
Robert, thanks for the effort and I will be curious to see the final design, and perhaps even a buyer.
If we are keeping a tally for a re-run of the original ORG badge please add me to the list.
Alright! Almost there! the only thing that is bothering me is that the 6 looks like it is over rotating so I asked the to rotate it back about .25 mm. I think that will do it... everything else works now the 2's and 7 now have a slight curve and blend into the badge and the 4 and 0 are now line up with the W and 6 which now makes them part of the information on the badge before they got lost inside the eagle. and I have moved the mounting hole down 6 mm so one can aline the badge between the chrome horizontals. One more proof and I think we are ready for the prototype!
One question for all of you do you think the tips of the 'W' need to be curved a bit more? They are a bit curved now but I don't know if it is just an optical illusion...
Here is the latest proof:
(http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4328/19marchproof8arn00047a0.jpg) (http://img695.imageshack.us/i/19marchproof8arn00047a0.jpg/)
The W116 doesn't look quite right to me, maybe because it starts and ends with characters needing more space than the middle pair.
Think it would look better if the 1s were closer together and closer to the W and the 6 moved closer to the 1, then the whole lot centered in the available space.
The 2 in 1972 is too high.
koan
Good catch on the 2 in 1972... Since I am close to this I miss some things. I will see about the W and 6. I do think the 6 is off... Either way I will have them move things around to see how they look.
Thanks again!
Robert, I thought that when you were wanting to curve the 2's and the seven you meant that you were going to make them resemble a calligraphic 2 and 7, which I thought was really neat since the crest is of the calligraphic era. Maybe my eyes are failing me, but I didn't see a difference in the numbers after the fact. Oh yeah, if you have a batch made, count me in for one, too. Thoughts? AARON
Nice badge, but I don't see the link between ADAC and W116? Personally I would rather have the bird that represents all of Germany attached to my grill...
http://www.rollintl.com/roll/grcoat.htm
This particular bird design was created from a few old German badges which I took ideas from each and put them together. One was a 1930's ADAC badge, that is where I got the basic idea of simplicity. If you look at the ADAC badge you can tell that there is a big difference in design from my eagle. Frankliy I found their eagle a bit flat and lacking detail. The other was from a vintage Dueshland badge where I got the idea of the feathers and inside feather design see below, and from another Deushland badge I got the legs and talons. All put together we get what I have here... The eagle design for Germany has constantly change over the years. I choose to create an older looking eagle design since our cars are vintage (going on 40 years).
This is the badge that I got most of my design an inspiration. The body was exactly what I was looking for and I really liked the lines between the feathers giving the eagle motion. the head was a bit dull and I didn't like the way the legs where all red:
(http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/5268/pdeutschland.jpg) (http://img291.imageshack.us/i/pdeutschland.jpg/)
Here is the ADAC badge. This badge lead me to the idea of simplicity in design.
(http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/3116/adacpoellath4.jpg) (http://img268.imageshack.us/i/adacpoellath4.jpg/)
Robert
OK Stork, I rest my case. You've done 10 times more research than me... Keep up the good work! :)
Lol no worries :D
New proof, I had them shave the tips of the W and enlarge the 7. Not satisfied with the 7 and the 2 so I am going to take the 7 back to original size and make the 2 smaller. Also the left leg is much longer than the right so I am going to make it shorter. Everything else look good so far.
(http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/5606/8arn00047a011.jpg) (http://img821.imageshack.us/i/8arn00047a011.jpg/)
The second to last proof. Just making the left leg thinner and rotating the # 1, in 2012 a bit, it looks over rotated. Also moving one of the lines between the feathers closer to center it between the feathers, and curving the top right hand line between the feathers. Once done it is off to the prototype stage!
Robert
(http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/9283/march228arn00047a011.jpg) (http://img819.imageshack.us/i/march228arn00047a011.jpg/)
Another one: the spine on the lower right wing feather is shorter than the lower left.
Good catch! Thanks... I passed it on. It is amazing if one is too close to a project one can't see the imperfections!
I think there will always be imperfections but it comes down to the imperfections you can live with, or when you have just had enough :)
It is the imperfections that make it unique :)
True, just trying to take care of the obvious.... The badge design is now done just waiting for the final proof and then we are off to the prototype stages ;D
Here is the final proof! I left a few things off to give the badge that hand made look which I think I have managed. I had another proof where everything was perfect and it just looked generic. I am very happy, hope you will be as well!
Now its off to the prototype stage! Here is the last proof...
(http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/5606/8arn00047a011.jpg) (http://img191.imageshack.us/i/8arn00047a011.jpg/)
Dear All
I would like to order two of each badge. I thought that the neck and the body of the eagle may need to be aligned in the same plane? (It has a very long right shoulder under the "4", and a much shorter shoulder on the left under the "0").
Going to pick up my first W116 on April the 6th! (450.032, 1979, with only 43,500miles.)
Happy days
Gavin
Hello Gavin,
Since the head is turned the chest, neck and head are off center line. Even though this is not an exact interpretation of an eagle I tried to make it look correct if the bird was to pose like this. I also stayed away from making everything exact. I wanted that old badge feel where things where hand drawn then put to production. Not like today... which it is computer generated so everything looks exact and thus one dimensional. This is the final proof and it is how the badge will look.
I am only making this badge not the original W116.org badge. The site is taking numbers to see if there is enough interest to make another run of the original badge. So far I think we are less than ten, someone correct me if I am wrong.
Robert
The mounting studs broke off both my originals so I'm definitely down for 1 of these new ones!
Mike
Great work,
Not wanting to stir the pot, but that design would also be great as a sticker on a clear background that could adhere from the inside of the windows. ( just for the fuddy duddys that might be concerned about the badge getting ripped off the grill by a souvenir hunter, or by the mpg concious who might work out that the extra wind resistance of the badge make their car dip under the 12mpg etc etc hahaha, or the cleaning freak who cant sleep at night thinking about the dirt thats built up between the bage and grill.........but seriously the sticker would be great, and be cheap to produce??
Theyd make great centre caps for the baroque wheels too! also help in boosting numbers of production orders!! or am i just getting carried away now... ::)
M110COUPE,
You do make an interesting point... Stickers would be cool but now you have me thinking about caps and polo shirts and even tee shirts with this logo on the back and the W116.ORG on the left chest... okay time to slow down my brain... lets get the badges on line first... then we think of the others...
Robert
Quick update... I just sent them an email to see how the prototype is coming out... Once they write back I will let every one know.
Have a great weekend!
Robert
Good news badge is on its way! I will take pictures and post once I get it...

Enjoy!
Robert
I forgot to put the price. For W116.org members it will be $30 USD plus shipping. I will be approving the order for 40 badges Friday. I will also put these on ebay (once I get them), but at a higher price. I will find out manufacturing time frame and post it here.
Thanks to all that have placed orders!
Robert
I would like to buy two please: postage to UK.
Hello all, just doing a recap of who wants a badge. Please let me know if you want to be added to the list or taken off. I will figure out post to Europe, Australia, Africa, etc. this week. I am also working on finding the correct mounting hardware. I did not like the ones that they provided. The new hardware should get here Wednesday. I decided to go with stainless steel.
Delivery time to me is around 3 weeks. So figure you should get yours 2 weeks after I get them. I will send everyone an email for payment instructions once the badges are in. So start saving one dollar every day from this Monday and by the time I get the badges, you can purchase one! ;D

Thanks for all the work you did on this Stork. It looks very nice, but I am going to take a pass at this time. I am sure you will get a great response to this from others and you seem to be off to a great start.
No worries Mike, there will be plenty left for now if you change our mind. I am still waiting for the hardware once here I will put it on my grill and take some shots.
Robert
Two for me too stork please. Just sent email 8)
Okay guys, I am a bit pissed off at myself for not thinking through this issue. I received the hardware today and put the badge on the bottom right side of the grill...
(http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/1731/img3593.jpg) (http://img847.imageshack.us/i/img3593.jpg/)
(http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/9194/img3594.jpg) (http://img855.imageshack.us/i/img3594.jpg/)
Looks good right, but when I went to open the bonnet/hood it would not open. Why because bolts are too long and caught on the the A/C pressure unit. Easy fix, purchase shorter bolts or cut the bolt after placing the badge.
So I decided to move it to see how it would look on the other side...
(http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/427/img3603h.jpg) (http://img861.imageshack.us/i/img3603h.jpg/)
Looks great! And the long bolt fits fine. But then it hit me and I almost slapped myself for it. When I did the measurements for the holes I only did them for the lower part of the grill not anywhere else, And I just realized that I am not the only human on earth... So I took it off and moved it around the grill and now the measurement that was taken for the lower area of the grill does not equate to centers of the rest of the grill. That and I never took into account the slight angel of the inner fins. So this is what it would look like else where on the grill...
(http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/3236/img3596g.jpg) (http://img851.imageshack.us/i/img3596g.jpg/)
Now it could go on top of both chrome horizontals but it has a tendency to slip. So unless something is place behind the badge to give it more leverage this is most likely the way it will remain. Another option is to bend the bolts to the angel of the fins... but to me this is just rigging it.
So now I ask all of the future purchasers of this badge what should I do?
Here are my options:
1. Build a new badge and move the holes 8mm up, then it would center with the rest of the grill. By doing this, one will not be able to center it on the bottom right or left of the grill (and It will cost more money since I have to order a new mold).
2. Go ahead and order the badge the way it is, in which if you want it centered the only area to place it will be the lower right of left side of the grill.
I am leaning toward option one cause it gives the greatest possibilities but I have to pay for a new mold :(
Just speaking for myself here but it doesn't worry me too much. I'm happy with option 2 and even happy to put my own fasteners in or make a plate to fit it elsewhere on the grill if I have any problems. I'm willing to go with the majority but FWIW I'm happy with it as is. Looks stunning.
I'm with Oscar... I'm not too worried, either. I'll make it work one way or another.
Mike
I'll live with it the way it is.
Hey guys, thanks for the positive reinforcement!
I have decided to go ahead and make a new badge. I just can't live with myself knowing I could have corrected my mistake and didn't cause of money... I will just charge more for the eBay badges, but for W116.org members the price stays at $30 plus shipping. It will take another 30 to 45 days to manufacture the badge so I will keep everyone updated.
As for the mounting holes... I took the measurements once more and it will never really be on center due to the angle of the inner fins so I will make is as close as I can for 75 percent of the grill.
Robert
Bloody fantastic job!
I'm down for two as well. (replied to email)

Hey Stork do you ever check your Personal Messages?
koan
Hey Koan,
Yes, I checked it an placed you on the list of buyers (page 5) Since I decided to remake the badge with the mounting holes higher on the badge, it will not be ready for about another month or so. Once it is ready I will post it here. Then you (and everyone else who wants one) can contact me via my email (page 4 I think) with your shipping address and I can figure out the post for you.
Thanks!
Robert

Haha, I Google imaged Joyce Barnaby after noticing that and it also came up with Barnaby Joyce. I get the reference!
Okay brief update, I just placed the order for a new badge to be made. The holes will be moved up to allow the badge to be centered (as best as I can get it) to the W116 grill. Figure around 45 days till I get the new prototype. Once approved another 45 days to make the batch.
As for the original prototype, it is proudly adorning the bottom left side of my grill. It look really nice!
Stay tuned...
Robert
Summer has been a busy time for me, but I finally got around to all things W116. Update on the Badge... Order for the new prototype has been place... once I receive it I will post once more a picture of the new badge (well not new only the holes have been moved) and a picture of it on my grill. I will then ask once more to see who would want one. I have a list, but since it has been a while I figure I would ask once more.
Robert
hey pal, i'll be keen on one Stork-
how would one pay for this?
cheers James
I will do a write up once the badges are in production. Right now I have to wait until the prototype is in hand before I approve production. Easiest way for payment will be PayPal, but I will need to know shipping addresses before I can give total.
I should have the prototype within 45 days, once approved it will take another 30 Days to manufacture so that gives me enough time to go to the post office with addresses and get shipping quotes for all on the list.
Robert
Well, I was away on vacation and was excited to see the new badge in the post, but when I got home it was not there, so I contacted the company and they are sending me a new one (no charge) I hope by the start of next week we can get the orders going once everyone see the new badge (well same badge with the mounting holes moved up 5mm)

Awsome, still interested 8)
And it is finally here!!!! Old one on the left new one on the right. As you can see the holes have been moved up so now the badge sits nicely across the grill. I am glad that I did a new one! Now I can sleep at night...

Here is a close up on the grill. notice that she now fits snug between the two horizontals. I made sure that the bottom of the badge rest on the crest of the horizontal. It makes the badge look/sit better on the grill...

Better shot of the whole grill with badge... looks good!

Okay now I need to make some cash to place the order so we will have to wait a bit before I place the order unless folks want to pay in advance ;D the more I collect the quicker I can order them!
Please post or send me a PM if you want one so I can start the list once more. Price will be $30 plus shipping (I will get quotes for Australia and the UK/Europe) I will wait a week before I post the list. They will be $40 on ebay after I sell to the group.
Thank you all for your comments and praise!
Robert
I think I'd like one, however I've got one question - what's up with the "1972-2012" year range? I guess the "4" and "0" mean it's a 40-year range, but what is the significance of this?
I'd still like one of those older style w116.org ones as well...

His car was born in 1972 and it's still alive in 2012?

But why end at 2012? Hopefully the car's still alive after that too. :)
1972-1980 would make sense. I'm not saying this should be different, just wondering what the intention behind the 40-year range is. :)
Its all on the first page of the thread.
Whats going on with this?

There's not really any explanation. I've read it all again and still don't understand.
After stork's 25th August post announcing the final version was ready to go I was late replying via email saying I was still interested but didn't get a reply and no updates here so not sure what's happening. Whatever it is I hope everything's ok.

Yes, I can read this. I have read it. I still don't understand, what is the reason behind the "40 years" decision? I'm curious for Stork's reasonings behind the thought, not just historical mention of the thought. I'm sure there's some significance to it. :)
Never mind the 40 years, what I want to know is whether they are still going to be available for purchase?
bump....
I'll see your bump and raise you a response.
I want one.
+2 on the bump. I am interested in one.
I wouldn't mind a couple of the original version. ;)

anyone know if this is still 'alive'? seems the demand is still out there and the prototype looked good.
