Fangio Tribute Drive

Started by oversize, 13 July 2018, 04:41 AM

10th September 2018 is exactly 40 years since Fangio visited Australia and did a demo race with Jack Brabham and Bob Jane at the Hang Ten 400 (Sandown). The PM Malcolm Fraser was also there and did a few laps with the Maestro.  Earlier that week Fangio launched the 6.9 in Australia during a media day at Emu Bottom in Sunbury, Victoria.

In light of this milestone, I was thinking of a organizing a tribute drive starting at Sunbury and doing a circuit to Gisborne, Macedon, Riddells Creek, Lancefield and Romsey.  Finishing back in Sunbury.

The proposed date is Sunday 9th September 2018.  Just putting the feelers out to see if anyone's interested?

September 2018 marks 40 years since the 6.9 media release at Emu Bottom, Sunbury. In November 1978 55 presold cars began delivery in Australia.

To remember these events I'm planning a 6.9 Anniversary Cruise with MBCV. I currently have approval to use Emu Bottom as a photo opportunity during the day. The cruise is likely to follow part of the route used by Fangio during the demo drive.

8am Sunday 9th September 2018. All MBs welcome (hopefully mine will be ready in time)!

At this stage it's to start in Sunbury, then onto Gisborne, Woodend, Hanging Rock, Macedon, Riddles Creek, Lancefield, Romsey, Clarkefield and finish in Sunbury.

Anyone interested PM me. Further details via MBCV shortly.

Well despite the fact it's Father's Day (which I didn't check before setting the date:eek:), the date is locked and at this point there's 2 x 6.9s, 1 x 6.9 or 560SEC, 1 x 560SEL and 1 x SEC confirmed. Not sure how many more when it hits the MBCV Magazine....:rolleyes:

Thanks Mark for organizing the day,
It was great to catch up with other Mercedes Benz big block enthusiasts,  we had a couple of cafe stops punctuated by some excellent stretches of Victorian country roads, just perfect to blow the cobwebs from these big rigs.  My Goldie clocked up over 450 kms over the course of the event.

Here are some photos to share

Oh dear gawd an action shot!! Other than that great pix Rob! Thanks to the venue hosts and everyone's efforts on taking part. Similar events will have to be repeated...

And hopefully the 50th anniversary will be epic!

1mb max per photo with no ability to reduce file size automatically?? Seriously painful on a mobile phone!

Can admin please do an update?

One of a long list of reasons I don't own a cell phone. Landlines, keyboards, computers and big screens rule!
