We would need... a Mercedes-Benz.

After the TeamW116 exercise from a few years ago I'm a bit too burned out financially to build another car but if someone is interested in running a team I'd be keen to be one of the drivers (each team needs 5 drivers).

Discuss.

Ian does it have to be a Mercedes-Benz?

(Have a friend with a Lola T332 in bits, maybe we should make him an offer and shove a 5.0L AMG mill in the back lol)

As mentioned via email, just bad timing for me sadly.

It's also a great intelligence test to see who can win within the confines of the rules of the event.

So you need to be reliable to get through the 190-odd laps.  You also have to have enough power to do it, but not too much power that you get handicapped for it.  What they call the "bulls*it factor".  So you have to prove the car cost you $999 or less.  While it's possible to lie, they will pick it up pretty quickly.

Say I bought a used BA XR8 manual at the auctions and said I paid $999 and wanted to compete, they'd say that for BS factor the car can compete but it needs to complete an additional 75 laps and at the end they organisers reserve the right to buy the car for $999.  It's why when in the USA people occasionally enter $500 Porsche 928s and 911s which are then never seen again.

To win you need to have enough power to do well but not draw so much attention to yourself that you are competing in a highly competitive all-out race car.  It has to be reliable, but also easy to fix is something goes pear shaped.  Handle well enough so that the novice drivers don't come unstuck but at the same time stick so that when the skilled drivers are required to put down a large number of laps in a short period of time (ie. drive flat out for 50 or more laps at a time) the car behaves predictably.

Two cars stick out that would fit all these requirements:

190E 2.6 W201
C280 W202

Thoughts?

Ian.
