As in the horn, my just doesn't sound like it belongs on a V8 mercedes, it gets ignored even.

Is this a recognized problem?

Don't know. Don't seem to have any problems getting my horn noticed.

go to your local wreckers, find a 80's Volvo 240, remove the horn, replace your mercedes horn

These things are loud,

did that to my 230, next time someone steps out in front of you without looking you blast them,

It seems the pre-76 models have particularly wimpy horns.

My '79 280SEL and my dad's '77 450SEL both have way better horns than the other three pre-76 W116's here.

I assume MB made the change in that year when the other big changes happened.
'79 280SEL- 560,000 Kms
'73 350SE- getting an AMG facelift
'79 450SEL 6.9

I find my horns perfectly adequate - both 79's.

I thought my '73 timpy wooter sounded good :-[

I'm going to have to put a battery in my wrecks to compare.

I've just replaced what looks like an autobahn horn with one from a 126, 1 side works, the other doesnt....checking tomorrow on why.

What you need is a pair of fanfare horns like I have on the 300b. They sound like a ship is moving out of the harbour !
