I'm sure I missed other reasons but I'd be interested to learn why a W116 over other marques and other models of Merc too.

It was outrageously innovative at the time there was nothing quite so groundbreaking .The bodywork and innovations such as lights that never attracted dirt these were quantum leaps in the 70's.
It was so quiet and tutonically competant.Its what every captain of industry could and did aspire to , why wouldn't one want to be privvy to that unique experience albeit 30 years too late.

Well, I chose "Because I always wanted one", but like you guys its everything about the w116 that like and which influenced my decision to buy one.

You can't fault the w116. Well, except for the fuel filler lid............ahem.........
nah, really I love the w116. ;)

*Anyone here ever notice that after about a 15 year absence from the MB styling dept rule book, the W116/R107 style front indicators made a sort-of comeback in on the Vito van?

116's set a bit of a precedent, alot of the styling features have morphed over into the newer models, ALL the safety features pioneered on the 116 have followed over. It's still a damn good looking car!
