Who has the youngest 116
« on: 04 April 2007, 08:35 PM »
We have had a thread about the oldest car...
How about the youngest, the last of the production, the last delivered...

My 1980 280S was #122 355, delivered in May 1980. You will know that MB only made 122 849 280S', so it was one of the last 500.

I don't have the car anymore, so I suppose it does not count.

My 280SE is a 1980 model, VIN 11602462157148, but I thought they only built 150,593 280SE's - how does that work? - unless the sequence numbers are shared with the 280SEL's ? anybody?

I know it has to be a 79 but it looks like it may be almost an 80.

The paint code is 861-Silbergrun which ceased being used in 1979 before the switch to 882-Thistle Green for the 1980 year. I assume the model year changed in about September so I guess my car was built in July or August 1979.

When it was delivered would be another date again. I remember at the time in NZ there were a number of new or near new 116's around when the 126 arrived. A friend of mine purchased a new 280SEL in 1980 and I always wondered why he didn't get a 126 as they were about at the same time especially as he sold a 450SE to buy it.

It is not easy to find the history of cars in WA if you get no books - at least I don't know how to do it.

I know it is a UK model by the Fahrenheit and PSI gauges with a speedo with an odometer that reads in miles and a face that has presumably been replaced with a Km/Hr one.

The amount of rust is a giveaway and I also found British Coins under the seats when I stripped the car.

The nice part is the free revving Euro Engine.

very interesting. I have no documentation on the date of fabrication , but I do see parts with the year 79 in it and this should be normal as the parts are done before the car. What determines the year?, a) the year it comes out of the line or b) the year it is first registered to a buyer. I think what we have on the reg. documents is b) and that is what I  am living with (for the moment).

With my car it is more complicated than that because it's first registration would have been in the UK.

There were a lot of imported Benzes arriving in Australia in the mid 80's from the UK especially.

When registered in Oz it was and still is registered as a 1978 model - which it obviously isn't.

Maybe we shouldn't ask too many questions.

Yes, the 116.024 and 116.025 shared numbers.  They made 7000 and some change 280SELs, but mine is labelled 116.025-10-086662.  So Ryan, you definitely have one of the last 1000 280SE/SELs by the look of it.

According to our library, they made 150,593 280SE's and 7,032 280SEL's - totally 157,625.  My 280SE is #157148 - number 477 from the end, or in the last 0.3% of the production.  Beat that guys!  Its looking like I might just win somehting on this forum ;D ;D ;D

Roger,

According to our library, they made 41,604 450SE's and 59,578 450SEL's - totally 101,182.  Your car is #100557 - number 625 from the end, or in the last 0.6% of the production.  So close to the newest, but mine is closer to the end of the 280SE/280SEL series.  Although, since the 280 and 450 series numbering is independent of one another, we cant easily say whether your car or mine is the more recent of the two in terms of the dates they came off the line.

True -so true. When I brough the SS home and stripped out the carpets to clean them I found dried blood and broken glass (NOT window glass - probably the remains of a crystal flute, by the look of it) under the rear over-rugs.... :o
Sometimes it is better not to know.
In the cas eof the 450 I had to meet ALL the family of the previous owner and get 'approved' before I could buy it  ;D
