Who has the oldest 116?

Certainly some W111 Finnies were.  If a Finnie has a black-painted engine bay (original) rather than a body-paint coloured one, it was assembled in Oz.

Actually I believed some mercs, not necessarily 116's, were assembled in Australia after being shipped in crates?

I seem to remember seeing a story on TV about someone in NSW importing CKD 116s or 126s from Mercedes in Germany, building and selling them here. It used to be that a car in pieces attracted a much lower duty. Don't think he lasted long, he stood on both M-B and government toes.

US VIN numbers had a different system for some reason, so the above only applies to the rest of the world.
...
4. 6 = assembled outside of Germany. Most of yours would be a "2" which means built in Germany.

5. 2 = automatic transmission. If you have manual, it will be a "0"

That was only for 1981 and up cars, our 116s were not affected by this ridiculous US mandated system.

Interesting on the 6 being outside of Germany assembly, I had always known it as "1" for LHD, "2" for RHD.  I didn't know they did any other numbers in that slot.

Okay, so mine's one of the youngest 116s around (December '79 birthdate), but here's another numbers anomaly:

There were, according to my data, 150,593 280SE (W116 M110) models manufactured, yet my VIN ends with 155504.  Seems there must have been some numbers lost.  Were they, perhaps, test/trial examples that were never released to the public?

My '77 280SEL was 086662 (of 7032), so I am forced to believe that the 280SEs and 280SELs were assigned sequential numbers.

Chad, I also thought the "1" and the "2" stood for LHD and RHD and this is probably correct, but when I saw the the "6", "the made outside of Germany" explanation was offered.

You're right Greg.

These two digits being the 7th and 8th digits mean:

7thdigit = 6 RHD made outside Ger - 2 RHD made in Ger - 1 LHD made in Ger - and 5 LHD made outside Ger
8thdigit = as previously mentioned, 2 auto - 0 manual.

This was sourced from understanding chasis numbers at MBSpares

Adam, isn't that a 280 of some sort?  If so, I'm taking my stein trophy back but engraving "oldest 350" on it and wait till someone else challenges me again,     ;D

You can have the oldest 280 crown ;D Deal ?!

:D He he, deal! Yes that was a 280SE with D-jet. Great car. Superb throttle response and thanks to new shocks amazingly stiff ride for a luxury saloon.

Thereis a photo of my finnie engine bay tag here. This was a CKD unit assembled in Australia in 1962.

Hmmmm... I too have a '73 350SE. It's in the shop today, but I'll post the details over the next couple of days.

If it's older than Oscar's, do I get a new set of floor carpets as a prize?

oscar

What's this editjunk!!  Another challenge?
Bring it on  :D :D

If you beat me I'll gladly hand the stein over.  I'm just glad you didn't sell your 350 after all.  There's not enough of us here even though there's a stack of 350's around (in Aus at least) and south africa by the sounds of it :)

There is a stack of vrot(Afrikaans for rotten) ones around. The good ones are hard to find.

OK - can't figure out how to post the pic, but the details of my car are:

625
220 420 466 480 586
387 H ---          0
116028 22 9
3C M 160010 80458

Any clue what that all means?

And do I get the prize?

gregdeklerk

Looks like you have posted off the data plate, which does not have the full VIN. No prizes yet, we need more info!!

oscar

editjunk, have a look on the firewall plate.  See where mine below has 116028 22 016421. The "16421" is the build number.

All those 3 digit codes on the data or code plate you've written down can be deciphered here, paint codes are here

It seems the ex-owner did some illegal stuff to my car...
As it follows: 116 020 10 098264
So I have a w116 280S LHD with Manual Trans., prod. number: 98.264.
BUT... but... but... I am more than sure I have a 280SE LHD with Automatic Trans.
Engine: 110 922 = 280 with carburettor. No, no, no!!! My engine is fuel injected  >:(
What the **** did he do with this car to get it registered??? No problems with cops in a year... hope I solve this peacefully.  ::)
