Wheels magazine faster than a........

Hey,
Been getting some backlash at work recently and need a copy of Wheels magazine's test of a 6.9 (?) might have been 6.3 Mercedes . The article was titled something like "faster than a GTHO". For those poor soles not in Australia it refers to a locally produced Ford that was touted as the worlds fastest four door sedan in 1971. Unfortunately the bogans amongst us have passed down stories about this car and changed it so much I now hear of a 160mph 10 second 1/4 mile monster that could rev to 8000 rpm (yes a Ford pushrod engine). So knowing about this article (why didn't I keep it???) I would like a copy if anyone has one?

That's funny Roger, I was watching Glen what'shisface off Sale of the Century on one of those repeated-on-the-weekend-drive-shows that he did/does and the GTHO was covered.  The naration said something like "was the fastest production sedan in the world".  BS I thought.

I saw a copy of wheels on ebay recently but it was a Fairlane v 450sel, not 6.9 it was also $40.  I think this guys got a few so I'll have a search unless someone's got the right copy of course.

thanks .. Ill send him a message, Im pretty sure it was wheels not modern motor, I could well be wrong it was a while ago. Problem is there are so many dodgy specs for the Muscle Car era its not funny, never mind most of the cars dont stop or go around corners..... my point is , which is usually lost on the bogans, the Ford factory race team in 1971, going DOWNHILL at Bathurst got to 136mph. I dont think the bog standard car you got from the dealership would approach the top speed of the factory race cars, therefore the 300 SEL 6.3 is faster (but again depending on whos specs you use). Funny that the 300 SEl goes that fast with a/c, auto etc...

I have recently looked through my Dad's collection of old car magazines and have not yet found any mention of the 6.9 or the 6.3.

Anyway, we all know which is the "real" car

The 6.3 was supposed to be faster than a HO. I didnt find much on google...

maybe.....   wish I had never thrown this magazine out!!!! this is the reply I got from the guy on Ebay:

Both August 69 issues have road tests of MB 300-SEL 6.3 although it was faster than a GTHO neither article is actually labelled that way
Both in stock in our ebay store.

the way aussie journos view the GT vs 6.3 is the way i think the poms view the jags vs s class or landrover vs gwagen...biased rubbish trying to hype up inferior products...
