W116 Oddity At Wrecking Yard

Today I was out at a wrecking yard helping my roommate get some headrest brackets and unfortunately, all of the many W116s, and W123 and W126 coupes had been crushed. There was still a W123 coupe and SLC or two. However, they had just brought in a new arrival--a 1974 280S.

This is where it gets interesting (and I wish I had taken more pictures of the car)--it was a beige, carbureted 280S--but the entire body shell from behind the rear seat was from a brown 450SEL! Someone arc welded two cars together to make a whole, and slopped body filler over the welds. The car also appears to have been caught in the Phoenix hail storm of 2010 (I see sclass cringing over there).

It had a column shift transmission with all of the parts, except for the instrument panel. Darn! I bought the center console piece and perfect horn pad, and plan to go back to get the rest of the column shift parts.

The seat pans were in great condition. I got the front seat slabs with the coil springs.

Manual air conditioning, good windshield...

The front seat skins and headrests were nice. Bamboo interior, which somehow seemed to have a different texture than my 1980.

I spotted some odd bundt wheels. They were a lighter color than most bundts, had a slightly different shape, and "JWL" embossed on the side.

A coupe:

A limo:

And lots of 1970s Jaguars and MGs, each with nice mags or wire wheels.

I've pulled enough of these in the past that at least I know what I'm doing now. I'd be tempted to pull it, but am a little short on the cash with the other purchasing I'm making. The last one I had up for sale was a hard sale... I ended up unloading it for $100 and didn't make any profit on that one. I might be willing to pull it if someone were to offer enough cash. I'd hate to see it go to waste. When I pull these things, I get the box with all controls, blower motor, the majority of the main wiring harness, and faceplate. It usually costs me about $100+ for all the parts, plus an entire day's labor. Shipping could be done by Greyhound for lowest cost.

I need to make sure I park my car in the garage during monsoon season. I've seen lots of cars around here with hail damage. In fact, I've seen lots of late model cars in battered Mad Max condition around here (I have never seen so many newer cars driving around with no hoods or bumpers). I should probably get full insurance coverage when I start working again.

Thanks for the information about the bundts. I wasn't sure if they had any extra value. There are 4 of them at the yard.

I think I have a buyer for the heater assembly, anyway. I wouldn't have to ship it, either, since I'd just be dropping it off in Flagstaff with some other parts.

Yeah, I was going to ask about that. I need more early-style wheels. And the elusive rearview mirrors...

Also are the fenders in good shape? I need so many fenders... :/

Squiggle Dog

The steering wheel seemed to be quite worn around the outside edges, but a steering wheel cover would help hide it.

I think the fenders are in good condition. I was thinking about getting the right side one because mine has body filler from a past crash. I have no idea how I would get the fenders off, though. There is so much undercoating that I would have to use a hot knife or something just to get the fender off. When I pulled the fenders off of a W110 I parted out, they had just a skim coat of undercoating on them and I thought I was going to wreck the fenders while trying to separate them from the body. Any suggestions? I suppose they could be chiseled off.

Oh! I did forget that I saw some body filler smeared around the fender lip, but couldn't tell if there was any damage behind it.

Propane torch along the top edge will melt it enough to come loose without any damage. Make sure you get all the bolts and screws out first.

Dang, that's one of the things I just didn't have room for when I was making the last trip to get my stuff in Washington. Good idea, though. I'll probably get another one since I've been wishing I had it. I've used it with mapp gas as well.
