pretty impressive 4 the era! BTW have yous seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqMEGA76HsE. w123 crash testing. check out at about 8-9 seconds, about 50-60kph i suspect. Check out the horrific amount of neck flexion and head movement!!!! Id be pretty certian there'd be serious neck injuries!!!!! If some w123s had an air bag (Never seen one) would it be possible to retrofit that into a w116?

Regarding this W123 crash test link, did anyone notice that the last side impact footage is actually that of a W116?

And yeah, serious neck injuries for sure. An airbag would certainly help.

I've seen two 1980 W116s for sale in the USA in the last 6 years that were fitted with airbags - I believe the first ever offering in a passenger car.  I just checked car-part.com and they don't have any listed; but I think the early W126 parts are similar.  I wonder, would it be possible to retrofit a w126 steering column with bag into a 116?

Air bag tech has changed a lot since 1980 though John, Im not sure if id want one of the original design bags going off infront of me just quietly.

The other issue is longevity of the charge in early designs is now suspect AND the charge they used was highly toxic where the current and recent tech is not.

Living in a country where seatbelts have been mandatory since the early 70's I reckon a decent set of belts would provide better value than retro fit Airbags in a 116.

Failing that a 6 point harness and full face helmet with HANS device is your best bet.
