I now, most of the w116 drivers wont change anything in this beautiful car, but mine must have a good car audio installation...

Driven (actually) with 2 amps, a DSP (music is coming via bluetooth from my iphone) Arc Audio speakers + Subs making a solid sound... if anyone here, who installed also a non oem caraudio system?

I want to rebuild my trunk, so i need some inspiration (photos)  :)

Very nice! Although personally I think subs belong in the boot. I like what you did to the dash speakers. What's under the grilles? Would the tweeters work better mounted on the 'A' pillars?

I installed this https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Subwoofers/Shallow+Mount/TS-SW2002D2
in the rear deck cutout for the first aid kit.  Obviously it needed a baffle but that wasn't very hard.  A cover from here
http://www.parts-express.com/ sitting on 1.5cm spacers completed it. This approach didn't require any surgery.

The system is powered  by a Kenwood Excelon XR901-5 mounted on the trunk baffle in front of the gas tank.  Takes up little space but the baffle obviously now has bolt holes.  The head unit is some kind of Alpine unit, can't recall exactly which.

Obviously this isn't the pinnacle of subwoofers but it sounds surprisingly good with more-or-less normal music at reasonable volume levels.  For me that means listening for prolonged periods at highway speed without fatigue.  These cars aren't exactly quiet at speed (say, 80+ mph), so that's pretty loud.  if you need the neighborhood to hear you pound rap or house it's not going to do it. 

This was a pretty painless installation.  The hardest, by far, was snaking the cables from the head unit to the amp.  The bundle of 5 shielded signal cables is damn thick.  Anyway, worth a thought.

What is the total system power (watts) and what did you do for an alternator i.e stock or upgrade? I am curious bc I want to do my own audio set up, but want to know how much power I can use, without bogging down the alternator, I know it needs to be upgraded.

You're referring to the system I mentioned above?  Answer: didn't do anything to the alternator.  I did run a massive cable from the battery to a similarly massive fuse block and on to the amp.  My alternator was new when I got the car.  I haven't had any issues with it or any reason to think it was an issue.  Amp is remotely switched by the head unit.  Unless you're going for ghetto-blasting volume and bass I doubt you'll have an issue.  Anyway, then you'd be deprived of hearing the engine and nice, firm-yet-smooth shifts.   ;D

Under the grilles are Arc Audio Xdi 462 speakers. surely no high end, but fun to listen to

in the new setup i use three little HXA amps from eXcursion, a normal analog one for the front speakers (HXA 30 , about 2x100w RMS @ 4ohms) and a class-d HXA 1K for each sub delivering 400w rms @2ohms (the ArcAudio subs are 4Ohm dvc chassis). In sum about 1kW RMS. At the moment i use the stock generator, maybe i upgrade the trunk/audio system with a small 12v battery

A Mosconi DSP with crossover, eq & time alignment is the heart of the audio installs and gets his signal via bluetooth from my iPhone

Nice work, from a sound quality perspective the subs up the front would be fantastic. The most I have done in a 116 is use better quality 4" speakers but am using the old Becker now with W123 speakers.

double din, for me, is way to modern so i stick to the good old Becker Europe :)
