A bit of W116 6.9 trivia (or not) that may interest some (or not) ...

Lifted from the Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_450SEL_6.9#Notable_versions:

QuoteIn 1977, a German diplomat named Manfred Sittmann commissioned Brinkmann Karosserie in Bremen to build a 6.9 station wagon, or "estate car". Sittmann frequently travelled with two large dogs and a family entourage to Italy. German motorsports magazine Auto, Motor und Sport learned of the car and requested an interview with Herr Sittmann and a photo shoot as well.

The magazine's feature would be titled "Die teuerste Hundehütte", or "The Most Expensive Doghouse". This one-off 6.9 currently sees regular use with its third owner, a Mercedes-Benz collector in Pennsylvania.

I shall go a-searching for potential book entry interest (see that thread! - at http://forum.w116.org/index.php/topic,467.msg3597.html#new).

Seems the debate on what car was used in that film could still be disputed.  Ok the sound's dubbed, we know that, but do you reckon a 6.9 might of lost the rear end or lost steering on some of those turns on cobbled streets?  Very good film though, I'd love to get a hi res copy.

I've stumbled across the merc wikipedia link before.  Not bad for a quick reference for general facts.  I love the hypertext links, timeline and simple reading.

I saw the "notable versions" section and got a bit excited. Shah of Iran I thought?

How about a ROYGBIV 126

It's interesting how much we must miss when searching. Type "w116 6.9 wagon" in google and this very thread wont come up in the first 100.  However, this wagon appeared http://www.madle.org/emerc116t.htm
