Very expensive 6.9
« on: 03 October 2018, 01:52 PM »
Found this very nice and vey expensive 6.9 for sale at one of the dutch classic/youngtimer dealers : https://www.autoleitner.nl/en/index/cars-for-sale/1536612147-1977-7-450-sel-6-9-w116-for-sale

Rough translation of the description:
"At the time delivered via Emil Frey S.A. in Geneva to the Emir of Qatar for his villa. Mainly used for rides between Geneva and Paris in which the Emir had another residence. After a coup in 1995 in his country by his son, while the Emir was in France, the 450 SEL 6.9 was placed under the private collection of the Emir and was cherished. We bought the Mercedes in 2010 and sold it to a Mercedes collector here in The Netherlands. What's special about this car are the rear curtains and the Becker fridge in the trunk. The state of this example is exceptionally good! Personally the nicest 6.9 we have ever seen. From front to rear in impeccable and original condition!"

Nice example... yet not a single pic of the underside! When will those sales people learn that the suspension, drive train and underbody are a vital part of the story?

Considering restoration costs, the asking price isn't actually as ridiculous as it may seem at first. Provided there's zero work required on the car.

Whoever buys it, I just hope they'll drive it. It's a waste otherwise :)

Man that velour with the black paint, I am drooling over here ;D

Whenever I see velour in a Benz I think of this clip, most Yanks think a Cadillac is like a Benz, ha-ha-ha, nope:

It seems a perfect car with a price that actually reflects a full resto's cost/value, and therefore it is insane, unheard of in our segment of the market. I second that statement on the interior. Breathtaking, the ultimate business car of the era. This is about as great a combi one could have chosen back when, in a W116. But, wouldn't you be afraid to start using those seats in fear of long-overdue wear and tear? Or are there now alternatives for those with worn velours covers?

Holy Toledo Batman.....what a rippa?  Isn't it just drop dead gorgeous?! However, how achievable is that asking price? That's 150000 dollars plus in my part of the world. They were only 80K when new!.  yes I know that was a long time ago but.....What ever it fetches will surely set a new bar?

how achievable is that asking price

In Europe? Unlikely.
Looking at some of the latest auctions, they'll be lucky getting maybe 60-70k EUR for it, provided it is indeed totally mint.

This one recently sold for just 18k EUR - sure, going by pictures alone and the video, it's not in the same class.

On the other hand, this mint and far more unique example sold fo less than 80k EUR a year ago, with a 90k estimate:

magnificent vehicle. looks great
of interest Max, no suspension blocks.  its constantly noted they were standard but even in ridiculously good cars like this, where are they? they aren't in the wheel wells, they aren't with the spare - are they lost? unlikely, so were they never there??

While there are very few 6.9's in this condition which makes comparing it hard, I doubt it'll go for the asking price. It's just too high for the European market (for now at least). But that's just my opinion.

Nathan, it looks like the car has indeed no suspension blocks. To be honest I think I have never seen an 6.9 ad with blocks. When we bought #140 it didn't come with the blocks. It's a shame I can't ask the first owner if it came with them or not, but maybe the second owners remembers if they came with it.

I seriously doubt they were ever supplied with the cars when first delivered. Otherwise there’d be an empty moulded container somewhere in the cars, just like the first aid kits...

The Qatari car is absolutely beautiful.
Regarding the suspension blocks, most dealers discarded them after the car was shipped with them inserted.
