The W116 acknowledgement "Wave" - anyone doing it?

Started by 13B, 31 August 2007, 06:00 AM

I'm giving you other W116 drivers the "wave" when I see ya's, but no one is reciprocating... in fact most other 116 drivers look away

(As do W126, W123, W114/115, W108 drivers...)
450SEL 6.9 #5440 = V MB 690 , 450SE # 43094 = 02010 H , 190E/turbo # 31548 = AOH 68K

Yep ;D

But as you just pointed out, unless they happen to an enthusiast like you and me they are just snobs and look the other way. I don't know what their problem is. :-\

This might just tie in well with our badges...shows who's got it...and who's oblivious

Martin 280s

When I was amember of the GoldWing Club UK, owners of the GL1000 to GL1200 series would wave at each other. However, most owners, of the then new, GL1500 would ignore the lesser (older) model owners. Snobbery within a one marque/model club is a bit silly.

Our local MX-5 club is similiar, the owners of the new ones havent caught on yet, you get some really strange looks sometimes.

13B, you could be driving towards me on a freeway I'd probably jump the nature strip and have a head on just to say g'day :D
I think the grill badges need to be updated with some proximity electronics so any w116 wearing them notifies the drivers of an approaching one of us. 8)

True there's the difference between us enthusiasts and the others.  I also think that within the enthusiast fraternity, there's trepidation of the oncoming merc.  Is it a loved classic, or a rusty thrash about full of mullet wearing rednecks.  The cars are just sooo cheap.  I could imagine a top finnie on club plates attending a meet, not wanting to draw too much attention from the approaching sagging w114 with missing bonnet star.

I'm a waver ;D

I sometimes feel a tad silly when I don't get a wave back but the connection from a wave returned makes it all worth while :)

I was in the traffic yesterday in my 116 and a fellow in a 126 380SE was giving me an enthusiastic thumbs up!!

500eguy

I don't see many 116 drivers here, but i do try to wave or give the thumbs up! I forget even looking at the benz owners in a car 96 and up.... they look at me like the plague......

I flash or toot. Unfortunatley most 116s in my hood are driven by old ladies with big hair & no idea why that crazy guy in the beat up old blue thing is signalling to the. I'm scared I'll cause a crash one day.

I did pull up right next to a 280SE exactly the same colour as mine one day (lapis blue). I opened the window leaned over and said: Mate, that is one UGLY car you got there! Gave him a good laugh.

I'm waving, tooting, flashing, thumbs-upping, driving round and round the block, parking next to them, doing illegal u-turns to drive right past, following them home...

Basically, even if I'm not in Kermit, you guys will know if I'm somewhere nearby  8)

13B,
you shuold have started a poll!
i love to flash, or wave at least (take that statement how you like)
particularly for the 116, but any mercs...i got reciprocal treatment from white 123 when i was in my wifes white 123 the other day...
Crayford, just wait til you see another G wagen in the next 4-5 years - that is satisfying!

I always raise a (friendly!) finger to W140s and earlier - and get some responses.  Waste of a finger trying it on post-2000 models, though.

Who asked what's wrong with the drivers who don't respond?  Their heads are attached to the wrong part of their anatomy (or even a long way up it).

Here in the rust belt (salt, wet snow, and a culture of no carwashing) I've never seen another 116 on the road when driving mine, and only saw one 450sel (ratty) and two 300sd models in the last 3 years.

(- 11 months of course, limited driving when in the clink)

I've actually been copping quite a few salutes for driving the 116.
It's funny how you never notice how many of certain model cars there are on the road till you own one.

I've come across quite a few really nice 280SEL's, and a couple nice 450's.  After giving the salute, it generates a nice smile and a wave back.

In saying that, i've also copped some very confused looks...which they probably realise after i passed that it's the whole 'same car' wave.

Yet to see a 6.9 on the road in the berra though.  :(
