My lady friend and I are on a little road trip to Wyoming. The goal is a friend's cabin at the end of a 10 km gravel road. The surface is bit rough with a few small potholes and washboard sections, but very, very far from being "off-road," or 4x4 only. Fine for most cars.
Anyway, as we're turning off the highway onto the road a guy in a Subaru starts waving frantically at us. We pull alongside and ask him what's up. He replies, "your car is way too low! You'll never make it!"
I replied that I knew the road, but asked if there was anything unusual or if it was just gravel and washboard. "No, just rough," he says.
"No problem!" I said. "Watch this!" as I pulled the knob. By now all the kids are hanging out the windows watching. The car rises and the guys mouth drops open. The kids start cheering. And off we go.
It really was no problem at all, just slow. But what a perfect set up! Makes all the trouble worthwhile. I have no doubt he'll tell a few pals about the crazy old offroad Benz that goes up and down. Gotta love it!
