Was the registration plate "AX1" originally on a Rolls-Royce from the turn of last century? however, it does suit  the W116, I suppose it does have a connection with RR too. If I remember correctly RR used a W116 350SE and a Ford Granada as comparison while they were developing the Silver Spirit.

Nope. had it with the family since it came out in the mid 60's. First it was on a W108 280SE 4-speed column shift. Then in 1978 the family bought this 116 350SEL and transfered the Reg over. Sadly the W108 was sold for RM6000! (AUS$2000! coz at that time no one could drive a "column shift manual"... so the story goes...

Yes, after checking on the net, the Rolls-Royce in question was AX 201!

Hi

Just an update. During the drive yesterday i noticed knocking sound from the left front during hard braking and when driving over uneven surface.

Got the car on jack today, and found one of the Left Front lower arm bush has perished. So basically the entire front suspension is "moving" backwards everytime i braked... (glad i found this out now and not later)

Also heard from fellow Merc owners that this is pretty common on older Merc?

Anyway I better get this sorted soon...

Cheers

It's even more of a problem on the W123/126 with the guide rod balljoints, when they wear out. My 450SEL does this clunk under the same conditions... needless to say all bushes need to be replaced on the front end of that car.
