Some interesting service information I found

I'm always buying any literature that I can find.  It's almost an obsession, and while I am almost out of room for literature, I still buy when I find interesting pieces.  Below are some pictures of some of what i recently bought.  Some of this I did not know, and some I did.  I just wanted to share a few of the more interesting pieces I've found so far.

The service memo about proper filling/checking of transmission fluid is particularly interesting as I think most of us here are under the impression that the transmission needs to be warm when checking the fluid level. I certainly was under that impression. Thanks for sharing.

I think all of is were under the impression to check when warm.  Granted, I've always known that the level could be checked when cold....but the rule of thumb here is to ensure that the fluid level is 10mm below the lower line on the dipstick.  Still, I've always checked it when warm.

And I doubt that the Mercedes Benz Dealership in New York ever suffered "economic hardship" as a result of having to fit a quieter horn.

haha.  no, likely not.  What they were referring to is the fact that NY City residents were being made to have to pay for this extra option that most didn't want, and also if a fairly new car was bought, subsequent installation of the fan fair horn set up wasn't a walk in the park.  It was very labor intensive, and cost the owner probably twice as much had they ordered a car with this option in the beginning.

Hi All,
That service information about auto trans oil level check is NOT correct.
All auto transmissions (except latest electronic units) must be checked with transmission oil temperature between 80 degrees Celsius and 100degrees Celsius.
If you cant measure the oil temp then a 50Km drive at ambient temps between 20-30 degrees C will attain that temp in the auto box.

Cheers

Greg, your observation is incorrect.  This literature is/was correct for the time period.  It was later amended by another TSB stating to check the oil warm.

It's also important to note that the transmission fluid level can be checked cold in all automatics up until the mid 1990's.  As I previously mentioned, the rule of thumb for checking cold is to ensure that the fluid level is 10mm below the bottom line on the dipstick.  That's simply a fact, and it holds true.  You should try it sometime to see for yourself.

Yes, 10mm below the low marking does work, but its not accurate and should only be used as a guide when doing initial filling after an oil change. The reason its not accurate is that cold (ambient) temperatures vary and ATF fluid "expands" or "contracts" as temperature changes.

At or above 80 degrees is the safest way to accurately measure the ATF level.
