Title: Sightings
Post by: koan on 12 April 2012, 02:30 AM
Spotted three 116s in the last couple of days, a rough red one yesterday, a very nice black one and another which I think was a non MB silver colour today.

Also saw a convertible 111 in the rear view mirror.

Shame mine wasn't clean and shiny, felt a bit embarrassed...

Saw a Milan Brown 6.9 over easter in Leongatha, a bad condition 450SEL in silver parked locally and a white 280 on the highway near morwell

Saw a white 450SE in Canberra last weekend just like mine but the rear bumper was bubbling with rust.  Haven't seen any in months around here prior to that one.

Most recent one was today at Mooloolaba I passed a beautiful bronze 450 SEL in what looks to be fantastic condition, everything gleaming in the sunshine. Personal rego plate, obviously very well looked

after, very jealous.

I just moved from an area where there were 2 other W116's (280 S model owners) residing within a 1 SQ KM radius. Cayenne orange and yellow. Both were auto's (mine is a 4 sp manual). They were in shocking condition compared to mine I might add - smoking when I saw them driving, terrible interiors, rusty, dented, scratched, a lot of trim missing, incorrect rims on the one! Did make me feel proud of my baby though  ;)

I stepped out of my front door this morning and saw 7 of the beasts in my yard  8) - sorry, I couldn't resist that....

But seriously, I hardly ever see one in the traffic any more.  Its months between sightings.

A few weeks back I saw a very late 280 S in thistle green and 7/10 condition pull into a gas station on a long haul from JHB down to Durban.
The occupants, a pleasant young family. I was surprised and impressed to see a 116 doing a long haul.
The only others I see driving around are short distance drivers that never leave town.

Glad to hear you are driving yours now, Koan. Not seen a stray 116 for ages now.

Saw another two 116s today.

It's odd, a couple of years ago I'd see one or two  everyday around Melbourne then they all seemed to disappear, they seem now to be reappearing.

Returned from Adelaide last night, went to Perth airport long term car park A to collect the car - what are the chances of 2 6.9s in there?

I live in the U.S., in east Tennessee, to be more precise.  To my knowledge, I only know of 7 in my area.  Mine, another forum member (I have never seen it or met him), a silver 300sd, my customers English Red 300sd, another English red 300sd, a horizon blue 450se, and a light ivory or maple yellow 450sel. Funny story......I recently have been traveling out of state a lot.  In doing so I have been driving my W116 on all of these trips.  I have had more second looks and complements on my W116 than I have been getting in my black W111 coupe......and most that complement me or take a second look are people much younger than I.  Strange how things go, isn't it?

This immaculate 280SE turns up in Bridgetown every couple of months. The DB registration suggests it's based in Donnybrook, about 60k from here. The picture does not do it justice, it is immaculate. I last saw it here about 3 weeks ago.

I saw a late spec 450SE LHD in midrand this week.  Given that there are perhaps max 5 of these 450's in SOuth Africa, thats pretty long odds.  I've not seen this particular car before.  Condtion was pretty ordinary.

Last week I sat in a small town far away (Reitz, Free State) waiting for the Toyota garage to reopen at 14:00.
I was parked under a tree near the town's main 4 -way intersection, when a superb yellow/black leather 280 S, steelies, mudflaps, came racing towards the stop, used it as a yield, and sped off. The motor sounded very healthy and the auto box too.
I dropped my lunch and followed the driver for @ 1km.
Out popped a busty, well-dressed blonde in a furr coat and boots.
The car has no sun damage, and the tail-light lenses were clean, clear and bright. It also looked more like a mustard yellow - but it was original.
I was amazed at the condition and it had front head rests as well, so I figured a '76 - unless it was an earlier model optioned a bit.
Interestingly, the car had Johannesburg reg.

Quite a while ago I saw a navy 116 in an industrial area near Melbourne airport.  I was convinced it was a 6.9, but I was on the freeway and didn't get a closer look.  There's not many navy ones getting about and the only other I've seen was in Coburg.  It was a 450SE and looked nice from a distance, with late wheels fitted.  It may've been the same car I saw near the airport, I'm not sure.

Spotted a low km one in Sunbury which was a red similar to mine.  I spoke to the elderly own for a while and I doubt he uses any forums.

Spotted a silver 116 this morning on my way to work in the half-dark.  It was parked outside an inner city house in Carlton and I might stop to have a closer lookwhen the light's better and I have the time.

I'm spotting a few sad looking 123s, but not many 116s

Saw a beige W116 at a used car lot in Ramsey Minnesota.  Unfortunately, I was traveling on business and there was no way my colleague would take a 5 minute break while I took a look so I can't be any more specific than that.  Small town though, so I guess if someone were interested, they could call everybody in town :)

No other W116s this month.

I saw a nice W116 around the Glen Osmond area over the weekend. I wasn't in my own car so there was no wave or eye contact or anything.

It was a big one! Looked to be a long wheelbase, signal red, with them chrome wheelarch flairs. It had personalised number plates and seemed to be in good shape and probably owned by an enthusiast.

They're at that age now where all of the rough ones have been scrapped. Any time I see one these days it's in pretty good shape and driven by a man with a very impressive beard who likely takes good care of it and should really consider stopping by the ORG for a cup of tea and biscuit. ;)

Vienna 25/05/2015

Whilst on a city break for the second May Bank Holiday, I saw this (? cayenne orange) 280S with column shifter, with type II plaid upholstery and manual air-conditioning on Canovagasse in Vienna.

Added better quality pictures (sorry about the reflection on the window for the internal shot) and on a second glance there is no air-conditioning, and the external colour is quite orange.

I beg to differ (although no expert) - I think we're talking 'Colorado Beige' here.

This is my old 'Colorado Beige' 1977 W123 - the interior is the same too, I think.

Took some getting used to, but now we love this colour combination. It's very 70's 'earth colour' - and was apparently very popular in Germany (if German e-bay is an accurate indicator).
Title: Re: Sightings
Post by: gavin116 on 28 May 2015, 02:32 PM
Hi Nathan and Shaggy

Yea Nathan, nothing quite like cassette tapes to emphasise the 70's!  I seem to remember having an ABBA cassette in one of my photos on my post (blog).  And so handy to store a good collection if you have a column shifter.  I draw the line at wearing flares though.  ;D

Shaggy, I think you are right.  When I originally posted the sighting, I had actually written colorado beige, but then on second thoughts, I leaned a little more toward orange.  Hence my "the external colour is quite orange".  I should have rather struck through my initial colour, but somehow I deleted it. (Nice 123 there by the way.)

At any rate, I've been very lucky spotting 116's recently.  There always seem to be 123's about, and of course the ubiquitous R107's.

Keep spotting.

Gavin

What about the seats? Did you have the covers custom-made?
Title: Re: Sightings
Post by: shaggy on 29 May 2015, 04:30 PM
Gavin - It's true that Mercedes Colorado beige seems to incorporate a whole spectrum of nuances depending on the life the vehicle has led, which may lead to confusion. In the case of my w123 (sadly sold last year), it was a sorry, flat, milky colour when I got it and only much vigorous polishing bought out the orange hue. In fact, one of the reasons I sold it (apart from the acquisition of the 280SE) was the alarming rate at which the paint lost it's shine - keeping it looking nice was like painting the Forth Bridge! I suspect it had had a cellulose re-spray at some time in it's life.

Hi Floyd, yes, that is the original interior and the seats are as they left the factory - a tribute to M.B. robustness! I'm wishing I had kept hold of it now....

I saw this one parked outside of where I work.

Seemed a little bit rough but that is often the way here in South Australia because we have no kind of routine compulsory roadworthy inspections, which means that older cars can be nursed along for years longer than would be economically viable in other states. This one seemed to be a fairly highly specified 450 with a sweet set of pentas. No LPG tags on the number plates so I suppose that the owner is footing the bills for petrol, which makes him an hero, and with no door covering the cap to the tank, a risk-taker.

I see W116 models pretty frequently but I rarely have the chance to take a photo. Still, I was surprised to see one parked outside my office!

Spotted another 116 on the way to Malaga airport yesterday. Looks to be in good condition, not sure if it's a 280, 350 or 450, but was a short wheel base. Wasn't my usual adept self with the camera, but you get the idea. So, this brings the total of W116s I've seen in the south of Spain to 3!

Either a UK visitor, or a recent import (the €uro is strong against £stg, so UK stuff is relatively cheap right now)

Deleted from many cars by the mid-70's, for safety reasons (potential removal of pedestrians kidneys!), many UK/European motorists couldn't get used to door mirrors (well set-up wing/fender mirrors don't have a blind-spot), so they were still available as an aftermarket accessory for some years, and many 70's/80's wings/fenders were drilled in their honour...

Hilarious that, although the 116 had some of the best door mirrors available for the the era (adjustable from inside, spring-loaded body and no quarter-light windows to block the view), and this one even has the optional extra-cost passenger door mirror fitted, it still has wing-mirrors fitted.

I presume that those extra mirrors could also have been to aid the driver when towing. If you look at the pictures of the rear, it has a tow-bar fitted (as did Mrs White). Perhaps the original owner was a serious caravaner or speedboat enthusiast; I dread to think what it must have cost in fuel bills...

What's with the crazy fender mirrors?

Deleted from many cars by the mid-70's, for safety reasons (potential removal of pedestrians kidneys!), many UK/European motorists couldn't get used to door mirrors (well set-up wing/fender mirrors don't have a blind-spot), so they were still available as an aftermarket accessory for some years, and many 70's/80's wings/fenders were drilled in their honour...

Hilarious that the 116 had some of the best door mirrors available for the the era (adjustable from inside, spring-loaded body and no quarter-light windows to block the view), and this one even has the optional extra-cost passenger door mirror fitted, but still has wing-mirrors fitted.

Fair point, but even so, those wing mirrors are so ugly, especially when they are fitted to a car with such modern, good-looking (IMO) original door mirrors.  :o

Now I know why those towing mirrors were invented that clip onto the existing door mirrors.

I'm actually quite encouraged by the pricing of that silver auction car - it's very similar to mine, except I have blue mb tex (and brown rust...). Seems like it went for a lot more than most of the eBay U.K. fare

Just on the outskirts of Athens, spotted this green 116. Had to be real quick as we were driving by, so picture quality not great. A short while later I saw a black finnie: heaps of chrome on the sides, so probably a 300. Wasn't quite so quick on the draw with the camera for that one though.

I maybe see 1 per year here now and usually it's an old dog 300sd beat to hell. Yesterday out of the blue I saw a great looking astral silver 108/9 but I was totally not expecting it so did not get a good bead on the trunk lid as it went by. Think it was a 300 of sorts...rare sighting on Vancouver roads indeed.

Forgive me for resurrecting this thread after a 2-year sleep but it seems the right place for what I saw today.

My wife and I are driving on I-81 approaching Salem VA.  I mention to her that in 2009, I was driving my walnut brown 1980 300SD and pulled it into the rest area we were about to pass.  I had bought the car and prepped it for the 1500 mile round trip over just two weeks and it was an interesting day covering 700 miles in a mostly untested car.

Just a few seconds after telling the story, a W116 which appeared to be Milan brown  passed by on the other side of the interstate.  What an odd but enjoyable coincidence.  To recall a 10 year old story about a brown W116 and to see one pass by on the very same spot hundreds of miles from home is unexpected.

Wonder if the car I saw belongs to anyone on the forum?  Anyone heading south on I-81 out of Salem today?

Nice one!
I see less and less on the roads here.  It is usually the VERY long in the tooth SD limping along ::)  Summer now so maybe I can see the "lesser spotted" 6.9 out here, other than mine of course.  I know of 1 or 2 maybe in the whole greater Vancouver area, other than the ones who went to the big scrapyard in the sky :'(
