purchased and wrecking 6.9 #18

a few weeks ago I obtained 1975 6.9 #18! one of the lowest known VINs in the world.  when I cleaned up the back of the block, engine #12!!
An elderly chap reportedly bought it in Germany and brought it to Australia with him, but I dont know when.
damn, I was excited but then reality kicked in.   This was one rusty heap. to make matters worse, someone had converted it from LHD to RHD poorly so parts were all over the place, things had been hacked up and a lot of things weren't connected.  TJ, Major Tom and I got it running manually but the water pump was screwed, and it wouldn't pump up.  The sad fate was dished out, it was to be parted.  If it were RHD with such a low VIN I would have restored, but it was not the case.  It seems it was white to start with. I attached the first pic that I got as a lead, the car sitting in its barn (I know I know), having been idle for many years.  The data card I obtained from the classic centre is attached, feel free to decode and ad anything.
the blue 116 is my dads 280sel he bought new in 1979, it carried the trailer and hoist to the wrecking ground.
I made a short video of the wrecking you may like to view

Nathan

Shame about how it ended but at least it will live on in other cars.

about the datacard I found the following:
Delivered to Mannheim Germany (first three digits of Auftrags-Nr. is 225)
Paint is 740 pastellgrau (gray)
Interior is 902 Blue Velours

Options:
410 : Sunroof
516 : Becker Grand Prix (LW/MW/SW/USW)
531 : Automatic antenna (in combination with radio installation)

It would have had steelies as it was still an option (640).

What I find fascinating though is that at typ it says 450 SEL instead of 450 SEL 6.9, just like on #140.

Interest g.  Nathan, what's the blue velour like?  I'm still after a usable set.

I would imagine all the really low Vin numbers would be LHD.  Would be interesting to know which was the earliest RHD.

What a good-looking car. It's a shame it was hiding so much rust, but there are lots of good parts. That right hand drive conversion is goofy! I'm amazed someone actually took the time to do it. The brake cylinder and fuse box still being on the left side--wow. And that extra wire harness to make it all work--what a nightmare--and this is coming from someone who is currently converting an automatic climate control to manual. That couldn't have been cheap.

Bluey looks fantastic! I like how the trailer has matching bundts.

Thanks Max for the info on the data card.

you note grey on the paint code but it definitely looked white to me. and the white was in areas there is no way someone would get to with a simple colour change?
Becker mexico? not to be seen, it currently has an very very old alpine 7151e tape deck/radio but the wiring harness from this was not original.
I wondered about the alloys. it has non factory bundt which made me wonder if it was steel hubcap equipped as an early car and someone later fit bundts. all 5 alloys were of this aftermarket, so its not like they fit one cheap aftermarket after damaging one.

rum, wiper holders? sorry, not sure which part you mean. the main wiper arms have been removed from the window, I also salvaged the wiper motor. im sure I have the bit but admittedly rum, I work about 60+ hours a week and dont have time to get to a post office. send me a pic of what you want and ill see what can happen - you dont know anyone in Western Australia that will do your postal bidding to you!?

s-class, the blue velour is ok. it looks reasonable in this car, but that may be because the rest of this car was crap.  I had another car with blue velour before, it seems to go shiny, like a silver back with age and there may be a component to this there are no tears though and the side bolsters looked ok.  again, you dont know anyone in WA do you. postage could be nuisance on this as it will be bulky.

harv, my work colleagues mum lives around the corner from this house and saw my 6.9 being towed to the house. he followed it and then realised of course it was coming to my place - good spot on the shirt! perhaps one day ill see you in a west coast eagles jersey!

SD, the conversion is strange. some bits would have cost a fortune, others have been done very poorly. the dash was held in with one bolt only! the air vents weren't connected. but then again, some got a blue RHD dash with the burl. but they left the booster and blower motor in original positions. very strange. this is part of the reason it was not worth salvaging.  also, when we jacked it up, one of the stands went straight through the floor! he rust was horrendous again.

Nathan, I believe ''wiper holders'' are literally the metal that holds the rubber wiper. They are NLA. (I think)

These:

1983 240D
2000 E55 AMG
2002 G500

Not sure about the NLA part, but I have seen lots of these in NOS over the years. I must have bought 3 pairs along the way. Seek and thou shall find.

TJ 450

I doubt there's any value in having these wiper assemblies shipped from Australia, there would be many in the US, you'd think.

I love the fact that it's literally a barn find!  How did you find the car??  Great colour combo even though it's not original.  Despite the fact it was full of rust and it had a horrible RHD conversion it's still exciting!  Salvaging usable parts means others can survive.  I'd hate to think how many went to the crusher without a whimper when there was no-one to around to scream STOP THAT'S A 6.9!!!!

Yes, that picture is what I'm after.  I have seen a few available, but the cost has been quite high.  So if I can  acquire affordably I would like them.

Many years ago MB and all stopped selling just the rubber insert blades and everyone threw their set out.  now decades later the insert is available and there are no wiper holders left.
