what s in the little box? A marker?

Touch-up paint - similar to nail varnish/mascara packaging, with a brush attached to the screw-off cap (two containers: one base coat, one lacquer). Long-since dried up, but worth keeping as it was purchased by the first owner, along with a full set of radiator hoses and a UK MB-dealer cleaning and polishing set.

My UK-market '76 with K-Jet came with the older-style books, so I'm guessing that the books were probably updated for the '77 model year at least - this was when the keys, door lock pull-knobs, steering wheel rim thickness, and lots of other stuff was updated.

Steering wheel rim thickness was updated in 1973-1974, and the KESO type keys weren't employed until late 1978. Regarding the door lock knobs...for 350se models up to chassis 051787 the more common early style door lock knob was used, old part number 116-760-00-65 replaced by 110-760-05-65.   From Chassis 051788 door lock knob 123-766-00-22.  The previous is the smooth rounded top style knob.

FYI.  All U.S. cars received the early style for the whole production range, as the Euro style was deemed dangerous in an accident.....not sure why, but that's what the U.S. department of transportation decided one day after smoking their lunch.

Wow, I knew that you'd know (that's a compliment!).

PS: Steering wheels may have got an update in '73-'74, but mine is a lot thinner than my friend's '79. (For the record, my chassis no. is in the 36xxx range)
