W116-M117

IMHO, the Mercedes-Benz W116 is the last european car that could mount whitewall tyres: because the trimming, because the body design, because... it's a W116!

It was the last MB with steel bumpers, so that makes sense.....

Actual Wheels, mmmm shiny

Same wheels on a 6.9

They're the same wheels I bought for my car!  I'd just like some better centres...  Oh the green car has what looks like three-piece wheels which are a little different and a lot more expensive (and all those bolts are even more of a pain to clean)!

Nice. When you get a pic on the car post it up. Mine might take a while to arrive from Germany.

My 116 280se 1977

I've put 100000kms on her and only problem was reverse band went in the gearbox this year.

It has been a daily, third car, kid lugger, work hack and we got married with her. Plans now are club rego, lowered springs from one of the members here and soon whitewall tyres.

The front doesn't look too bad there at all. Might be worth seeing if someone in qld can just reset the fronts a bit lower.

Scrubbed up nice mate. The BBS rims are a solid choice for the old girl.

oliveoyl

Hey Cam,

Yes will get fronts reset, they're about 0.5inch too high at rest but under power (!!) it's more like 1.5 " as the rears sink.

Gave the airbox a lick of paint.

Engine bay looking tidy there mate.  Airbox touch up always works wonders on the eye.

Regarding height difference changing under load, do you have the anti-squat?  I thought it was standard on all W116's, but I could be wrong.
If that's the case, you may need to look at the anti-squat setup and see if any of the components need a refresh.
...of course, the springs are fairly low, so may just be that.  ;D

Hey Cam, good to see you back with the real cars rather than the BMWs  ;D Anti squat in Aus only came standard on the V8.  Not sure if it was an option for the 280, but the trailing arms are interchangeable so it's easy to swap it into the 280 which is one of my next jobs :)

So what you're saying is that I need a parts car v8? :)

Hi Oliveoyl

It is my understanding that only the 450 has anti-squat rear suspension, the smaller V8 doesn't.  Worth checking before you buy.

Good point Gavin, I didn't think about the 350 so yes Oliveoyl sounds like you will need 450 parts car.

Btw Gavin, how is Mrs White going?

So this was 20mm too high at the front sill vs the rear. Was going to have a go at pulling the fronts myself but chickened out in the end. Now it sits right and hasn't lost much composure either.
