My father (age 76) just bought a nice w116 450sel with just 48000km's on the odo.
The car is in excellent shape, inside and out. The color is dark brown metallic.
Unfortunately the car does not drive on petrol at this moment, it's been converted to propane. That is something I will fix in the future. The previous owner invested a lot it the car to get it running on petrol but did not suceed.
He's put in a brand new gastank, injectors, fuel pump etc. The car gets fuel to the distributor and no further so it"s due to a rebuild I guess. The mechanic that worked on the car did not have the knowledge of these systems I think. I'm glad he did not touch it further and distroy things.
I will need to replace the rubbers and holders on the fuel injectors as well, as he only replaced the rubbers and left it with some cracked holders.
The car has original front seat heaters, I've never seen these on another w116 so it must be a quite rare option.
This saturday I'm going to replace all fluids and filters as the car sat in a heated garage most of for the last 20years and only got out every now and then.
I will post some photos later on.

Welcome! Nice introduction. Low mileage W116s are a rarity but mileage is not that important at the end of the day. It only has meaning to investors and not real enthusiasts who want to drive their vehicles. Good luck with fixing the issues and looking forward to hearing about your progress.

The car will be daily driven now. The forum does not allow me to post any pictures   :(

Why not keep it running on propane (or iso-butane?) though? Originality aside, there's no downside to it, and Netherlands has a good infrastructure as far as I can recall.

can anyone comment on the front seat heater switches?  I have seen like this care with 2 switches together on one side and also one switch on each side.

It might be because cars with vinyl center console trim didn't have enough space available on the left side to fit a switch and the plastic bezel that was required.

actually, the vinyl version has a series of holes all around for these buttons, holes to open up at will.
This may be a later install, not a factory one. and/or just a looks-thing.

I was looking at the ashtray. Does that thing have 2 lighters?

Most likely a retro-fit. VDH in Germany made complete repros - switch + wiring.

Most likely because of the vinyl trim. Found this picture from a W116 brochure :

This is from another brochure, a guess a 1977 or later

The VDH guru says:  the early black vinyl covered console has the double-switch on the right side, the later wooden versions have two separate switches.
