Title: New Stainless Steel Euro Bumpers Now Available
Post by: Squiggle Dog on 15 July 2020, 02:48 PM
I was browsing eBay and saw that now you can get a set of new stainless steel Euro bumpers for the W116 at what seems to be a very reasonable price. https://www.ebay.com/itm/114304948239 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/114304948239) I don't see them listed on their website yet. https://bumperclassic.com/index.php/categories/mercedes-benz.html (https://bumperclassic.com/index.php/categories/mercedes-benz.html)

Rookie seller, 95.2% rating over 60 transactions, and item located in Vietnam...
Hmm, what could possibly go wrong :)

One would still need the inner support and the mounting brackets if you were replacing NA bumpers.

As far as I know, they haven't even produced w116 bumpers yet..

I would suspect the quality to be sub par to be honest.  The original parts are heavy, thick chromed steel.  I bided my time and bought my front and rear set in bits and pieces as they popped up online.  If you are patient and check globally on ebay and such you can eventually come out on top with a nice set.  I was lucky and scored a complete rear in mint condition from germany, and the shipping was not too bad and arrived very well packed.

Everyone I've heard from says that the product is good, so that's something.

I was wondering about that myself.

Maybe some lucky person on this site will get to try the first set!

I hear the quality of their bumpers are very good. Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages to stainless steel. It will probably be a more realistic option as originals become more scarce and valuable.

I actually tried, might have been 2 years ago now.  They didn't have them.

I wonder what happens if a person clicks "buy-it-now".

Here's a review from someone who bought them. He said they arrived to him from Vietnam to Ireland in via airfreight in 4 days and was included in the price.

I can't see any of the pics you've uploaded SD. But if this is an Irish W116 owner, I might be able to find them and see those things in person some day. There's literally a handful of us in the country and I've met most of the owners that drive their cars. Chances are, they on the forum too.

Sadly, this forum seems to be dying and pictures are no longer showing up. This is from the W116 Facebook group.

It seems to me that restoring the original chrome is a better solution. If you have bumpers in a state where there are no holes in it. It can be saved beautifully.

Can't see these on ebay nor their website. My front bumper frame looks a tad rusty, haven't inspected it yet. These look great!

For about that price you can buy new/NOS bumper sets with careful shopping.

Re-plating costs about the same.

front center 116-880-04-70 is only $477,  rear is @600 from MB
https://www.mboemparts.com/oem-parts/mercedes-benz-bumper-1168800470

The ends can be had for @300 each or less

Has anyone here "Activated their Passion"? After now 2 fiascos with OE bumpers, I'm about to give these a shot and would love to ask someone with experience a few questions.

Due respect to those suggesting restoring is better... I've now dealt with sellers trying to scam me, shipping companies damaging them, misrepresentation (they're NEVER as nice as advertised and are all 50yrs old), and two of the worst plating jobs I've ever seen.

For all of my months of effort and thousands wasted, I am the proud owner of a complete set of OE euro bumpers with dents that have been pounded out, corroded portions of the rubber tracks, and chrome with so much poor adhesion and shadowing that I'd never put them anywhere near my car.

Sign me up for a new set all day long, please!

Glad you found a solution that works for you. Salt Lake Plating did an excellent job on several pieces that I sent them. You are correct that some vendors are not trustworthy.

All the other platers in town have closed shop in the last few years unfortunately. SL is the only outfit left for 500mi, and they know it. They quoted me $3,200 to refinish my set!  :o

Speaking of other shops closing, I barely managed to get these back from the one other remaining outfit I'd contracted with that then shut down. Apparently all the employees left under less than amicable terms, and had been deliberately doing terrible work for months to sink the owner. Hence my quality problems...

At least my brackets and carriers are good, and recently powder coated. It looks like these Tynda repos are just the covers.

Well, I took the gamble. I have to say, I'm very impressed (which is hard to do, I'm a picky SOB)! The entire kit showed up in about a week via FedEx air well packaged and undamaged.

The reproductions are definitely stainless and I have no reason to disbelieve the seller's claim that it's 304 (not magnetic). The material thickness is also adequate and they seem plenty sturdy. Maybe slightly thinner than OE, but if so, only just.

What I'm most enthusiastic about though, and certainly didn't expect, is that all the pieces are completely straight and polished to near perfection.

My opinion could change I guess when I attempt to mount them, but I doubt it. They puzzle together snugly, and the mounting holes and tabs are all in the right spots compared to my OE pieces.

I'm frankly amazed someone could make faithful repros of good quality out of stainless and ship them to the other side of the planet for $1,600, or that anyone would bother for what has to be a pretty niche w116 market at this point. Well done Tynda.

If these also fit as the OEMs do, that's amazing indeed. Mine are triple plated and re-chromed, but a backup stainless set wouldn't hurt.

I assembled these yesterday and my impressions are still quite positive. I'll provide a few insights, but AMA.

Overall, I remain impressed with quality and finish. If you're looking to convert and unless someone local to you has an OE set in known excellent condition, I'd definitely buy these.

I did discover one rather annoying thing unrelated to the Tynda parts while assembling though. The OE bumper set I purchased last year came with two left-hand outer lateral shackles (see last pic) for the front. I need p/n "1168850640" if anyone has one they'd be willing to part with.
