Nice car INC.  Great pics.  I've no expertise in 6.9 matters but the car looks very original with good trim and good paintwork.  Shame about a couple of damaged or missing pieces but shouldn't be too hard to find, hopefully.

I have to ask though, what happened to the roof?  I'm guessing the damage was inflicted by something more substantial than a boomgate.  Hope it's easily fixable.

Keep us posted with your efforts.

Did you get the car running yet?
Title: Re: Nice car
Post by: inc13 on 24 September 2005, 06:47 AM
Car is running ,but not quite right ...
1) dont want to start easy
2)misfires bit at idle
3)max revs 3000 rpm
4)stalls when accelerator pressed @ cold engine

Done so far:New fuel pump(original),fuel tank drained and cleaned, new HT leads(proper ones),distributor cap on rotor cleaned, distributor cleaned from oxide, vacum system checked and leaks removed, injectors cleaned up with brake/carb cleaner

Problems:
1)starter makes noise ,sound like there is few teeths missing @ ring gear......

2)Oil leak from oil filler/container

Im running out of parking space soon ......  :(
there is 3 possible versions what happens next

1)I sell this car as it is(ebay, clubs, etc)

2)I take engine, trans, rear axle+few more bits off,and give body away or scrap it

3)i get car running properly, and sell it

I cant keep it  :(

This looks almost exactly like the one I'm going to buy.  Same colour and mileage.  Except mine has rust and the leather seats are worn.  I like velour better.  How much did you buy it for?

Does your suspension work?

Wow, an 8 year break between posts! Nobody said that W116 was a short term hobby  ;)

The '73 looks too good to break. I'd love a super early RHD 280SE again. Something wonderful about the "minimalist" 116.

In those 8 years i have moved from Uk to continental europe..RHD car in here is not the best idea.
So,450 sel (lhd) is going to receive 6,9 transplant.Upside (in my mind) is getting rid of hydralic suspension.
When thats all done , 6,9 engine will fitted with turbo (big hx40 or hx52 pro) ,Ms3 efi and so on

Hello everybody,

Today I bought a 450 6.9 with a very special, kinda weird color green.

The plate on the car is mysterious too.

The car came was originally a factory car and comes with some interesting original letters from the Mercedes Benz management.

In these letters in among other things it is stated that the car was fitted with seats with code name 126 which was a unknown code back then. And indeed the car has funny seats that look exactly like 126 seats as they were introduced in '79.

What strikes and moreover puzzles my most is the color.

Can somebody tell me more about this car?

Regards,

Paul

Hi Paul,
there are a couple of ways to attach pics.
one is to use the www.w116.org site but i never learnt how to do this.
second is to use another site like www.photobucket.com which is what i do. its free, you upload the picture and then copy the link which is very easy and paste this at the end of your post. the only downside is that if you ever delete them off the site, they will be lost from a thread.
have a go and ask q's if needed.

WOW you've done so well so far and that turbo is huge!  Have you thought about how to route the exhaust and intercooling?  Why have you removed the inlet manifold?

I assume you're relocating the battery, but what about the alternator and AC compressor?  Do you intend to stick with the conventional springs n shocks, or carry over the 4 x SLS from the 6.9?

Inlet manifold is removed for few reasons:
*to clean up and paint engine under manifold
*drill injector holes over to standard size (in cyl head)
*modify intake for 80mm (internal measure) throttlebody

Exhaust has to be divided in two after turbo + body needs to be modified

mech. fan drive will be removed, radiator moves towards engine and then i should have space for intercooler

Ac is not going back on this car,no space for that, alternator stays in its place

I dont like SLS ,that was one reason for bodydonor

Yes it is european "high Cr" engine. Cr is 8.8:1

80 mm on this setup is optimal.Hole under Tb can carved out to 80mm,i dont see the point to have bigger tb if "bottleneck" under it is smaller. Also it is a struggle to fit pipe from Ic to intake over the engine with enough hood clearence.Same thing with IC piping.I will use 3 inch diameter piping after turbo(air side)

Point is: Turbo outlet is 3 inch dia. ,pipes to IC and out is 3 inch ,IC has 3 inch flanges ,Tb is 3,xx inch (76mm is about 3 inch) ,plenum opening is 3,xx inch.
If i do use lets say 4 inch Tb,what would be the benefit? I dont see it.

Hi inc13 not correct bolt spacing is 105mm I had adaptor made to fit GM LS throttle body after machining out lower plenum for 92mm throttle body leave 6.5mm to bolt holes. But you are correct about problems from fuel distributor to throttle body. All the best with project looking forward to seeing results.  :)

Im not going to use fuel distributor  and also ignition distributor is not going to be used. That does free up some space for me.
I planned to weld an TB adaptor straight to intake manifold, then i can use any bolt pattern for TB.
How did you adapt throttle linkage on your system?

Have cut old linkage from throttle body ground back smooth. And welded to new throttle body shaft. This car I am going to see what I can achieve with k jet at the moment. My old 6.9 was running full Motec efi . Hence my user name.  :)

Great job with the welding!  Not sure if it matters with a turbo, but the cylinders are normally paired with a NA engine into a tri-Y arrangement to encourage scavenging.  Obviously your design has to be reversed as the gases are being directed forwards to the turbos.  And if you'd like some constructive advice, I'd suggest your collectors are way too small

Manifold pipe diameter is correct (not to small) ,exhaust gas speed exeeds supersonic only in one place. If pipe diameter is larger ,spool up and full boost comes later. As it is Single turbo application, there is no actual need for ecual lenght primarys.
Also manifold desing is pretty limited because of narrow space (if ecual leng is a must ,there is no access for spark plugs anymore)

Just as a remark,im running "log style" manifold on my turbo bmw (inline six, boost 1,45 bar) without any problems.Spool is really good and so on.
Here is a picture of it

The pipe diameter is fine, but the collector area is quite small (where you've blended 4 into 1):

Oh here's some other Tri Y arrangements just for interest:

Obviously on some cars clearance is an issue:

something like that would be really nice ,,,
(http://px6.streetfire.net/0001/79/27/1659772_600.jpg)

But,there is no space for that..
Even with current desing it has to clear:
*brake system (lhd version)
*power steering (lhd version)
*Ht leads and leave enough space for servicing (plugs)

To fit crossover pipe:
*radiator needs to be modified
*radiator position has to changed
*oil cooler has to be relocated
*cooling fan has to changed to electical one

to fit 4 inch downpipe from turbo:
*body needs be modified (make a "tunnel" inwards  under passenger footspace)

And then i need to figure out how fit cooler  ;D

So we are not talking about exessive amounts of space here

Might be a dumb question, but how do you plan on keeping heat in the engine bay manageable?  6.9 tends to run pretty hot as it is (normal for them), I am guessing you will need huge intercooler as well as increased fan air to keep things under control?

Cooling fan is going t o be 4000 cfm 16 inch unit, intercooler size and shape will be decided after the radiator and cooling system is ready

Can those fuel injectors be used on any gasoline W116? (Like my 280SE)
If so, can you share where you got them and at what price?
I am just shopping for 6 of them..

Those injectors can be used on a 280, but you will need to do the following :

a) ream the injector ports in the head to accept them
b) fabricate a fuel rail with pressure regulator assembly
c) install an aftermarket injection management system to run the injectors.
