As I bought my w116 without books I got in contact with Mercedes Benz classic department hoping they could provide a "new"data card. Sadly they said the w116 was too old and they didn't provide them for cars that old.
They also wouldn't provide any info on my car if I provided the vin number and a proof of ownership.

Is there somewhere else I can check,
I really want to find out the spec my car came in.

Thanks,
Neil.

Neil.  It's true that they can't send a new data card to you.  However, they can send a copy of it to you.  Someone doesn't know how this system works, it seems.  While you do have to show proof of ownership, the Classic center should have been able to send you a copy.  That just doesn't make any sense.  Send me your VIN in a private message and I'll see what I can do for you.  AARON

Ok Neil.  Attached is a picture of your data card.  I'll explain the majority of the important thing and what they mean.

Block 6 is your actual Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

In block 7 is your exterior paint code.  717, which is Papyrus White.  (A very very light grey color....almost white)

Block 8 is your interior trim code.  262 is the code.  the "2" signifies leather, and the "62" signifies blue.  The actual color code for the blue leather is 5020.  In addition, in the interior appointments book is listed the species of wood on the dash.  Your car is supposed to have Rio-Palisander, or Brazilian Rosewood.  If you have your wood refinished, try to keep the original veneer, as Brazilian Rosewood is illegal to harvest, and what little old stock is lefts is horridly expensive.

To the right of block 9 starts the three digit option codes the car came with.

401 Single seats up front
420 Automatic transmission, floor shift
436 Elimination of front left and right automatic safety belts
451 Tachometer in instrument cluster
461 Instrumentation in English
524 Paintcoat preservation for shipment abroad
540 Seat adapter for area between front seats
570 Front folding armrest
580 BEHR air conditioner
590 Green tinted heat insulating glass all around
613 Asymmetrical headlamps for left hand drive traffic/right hand drive cars. Make Bosch.
625 Version for Australia
631 Equipped with first aid box
668 Packed with styropor bumper rails for shipping.
677 Tropical battery, (withstood high heat temperatures)

In the box where it says "Wenig Gewunscht" (means additionally requested by original owner) are two more option codes.  They are as follows:
220 rear door contact switches for rear dome lamp
286 Luggage nets on the rear of the front seat back rests

Block 9 is your engine number
Block 11 is your transmission number
Block 13 is the brand of headlights your car came with
Block 19 is the brand of tires your car came from the factory with, (Phoenix)
Block 24 is your key code for cutting new keys.

Your car was a radio delete car in that it was ordered without a radio, so if you want a period correct radio you'll have a lot of options to choose from.

And at the very bottom is stamped the day, month, and year that your car was completed.  July 17, 1974.

Hope this helps you find any answers you were looking for!  :)

Hi Neil, does your car have a York Star Motors identification plate as this may explain the radio delete.

You sir are a legend.... that's amazing info, I can't thank you enough.

Interesting point in regards to no radio, there is "now" a Becker cassette but also its wired for the auto rear aerial and has a front fender aerial.

Where would I find a York star motors I'd plate on the car?

Again thanks sooo much.

All W116 cars came wired for aerials, and the wiring was also there for the optional electric aerial.  And I believe the early cars had an aerial on the front fender anyway.  As for the rear one on a car with a front aerial, that may have been reserved for a Tekada car phone.  It could also be that someone didn't know that the cars switched to rear aerials in 1974, so they put one up front because that's all they knew.  Hard to say.

Hi again Neil, lift the bonnet and you might see a York Star plate (Blue) on the bar just in front of the radiator, usually on the drivers side near to all the other plates.
