I too was at a point where I thought I would have to remove tank but found one attempt that I got it out. I had best go practice reinstal a few times now to see if I can learn a good instal method. I did note that removing the tank gasket gave a small amount of room up. Besides obvious tight fit the thing has spring loaded arms to deal with.

Rear of car and  fender epoxy coated. Now a couple of weeks of bondo .

It will all be worth it once the fresh and shiny paint is applied
