Brilliant!
It's quite funny, assembly lines haven't really evolved much since. Just got  more automated.

Must be from very early production days  too. Nice to see the W116 was indeed already machine sprayed (to get back to Mark's paint thread).

Makes  one wonder if any Org cars were featured ;)

So many interesting things.

They put the taillights in as one piece which I thought was impossible. Then they put the windshield in with the trim already on the rubber with a string inside it. Then beat on it with a hammer!

Could watch this for hours. How many people did they use to build this car, though? You seen those crowds at the QC line?
Also, they clearly used totally safe spray paints those days, with no protective masks required. What has the world come to today..

that was great..... ;D.....intrigued to see how those mongrel windscreens were belted in?!
also dismissed a long held myth.....the dash boards were inserted thru the cabin not the windscreen and were not prefilled with  gauges and gadgets.
...it does appear however that the dash is best replaced with the windscreen removed.

Yep, in my experience it's not possible to fit it through the windscreen opening, but allowing it to overshoot the window opening would help in fitting it as in the footage. The hammering of the trim corner would be to make sure it locks in as they always like to pop out. The rest of the screen installation would be with the string as usual.

As with everyone else, seeing the dash and windshield installation alone was a invaluable. I think that settles any questions that remain on those topics finally!

Thought I d re-post  Peter's other links here, just in case it was missed. 2.5 hours of ex-MB top engineers talking shop, with much on the W116. Worth getting a couple of German lessons. auto-subs are available, but of terrible quality, just enough to get the point.
