Here are some original songs from the Becker democassette. Every customer, who was interested in Mercedes-Benz cars with a Becker radio, became this songs played by the MB-salesman to show the quality of this radios. It´s only instrumental.

Part 1 Beautiful Noise - American Patrol / The Mood - Griechischer Wein / Schmidtchen Schleicher
Part 2 Pata Pata - Tränen Lügen Nicht - Save Your Kisses For Me
Part 3 Happy Andi - Johnny Guitar - El Bimbo / John Brown´s Body
Part 4 La Seine - The Hustler

While in Germany last week, my friends received a large box from Mercedes-Benz containing a CD (yes, a large box containing only a CD) of music that featured Mercedes somewhere in the lyrics - such as Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz". Seems they do this occasionally to encourage previous buyers to update their vehicles, but not sure of the merits of doing it in the current environment.

that music so doesn't suit the austere appearance of a w116's interior.

that's like the macquarie bank ceo turning up to the periodic board of directors meeting wearing a Hawaiian shirt and shorts - it just doesn't go.  8)

I can remember my parents got their new Mercedes with a Becker radio on the early 80ths. This instrumental songs were very suitable by the conservative customers at this time.   8)

I swear we've had this discussion before Wolfgang ;)

It's not about the relevance to popular culture at the time (or lack of), but the ability to effectively demonstrate the unit, all the while not offending customers. I think it did the job well, covering most aspects of sound reproduction with the exception of vocals. ;) 8)

Thanks for the links Wolfgang but I have to agree with Pat.  At first, Part 1 sounded like the theme from "Shaft" was about to play.  Cooool! I thought to myself and Pat was wrong.  But then it broke into a cross between a Wierd Al Yankovic polka and a "Carry-On..." movie themed tune.   ::)

I'll have to listen to the rest later but whilst I can appreciate the need to demonstrate the sound system with something conservative yet contemporary I reckon they may have been better off winding the clock back and handing over some orchestral classical tapes or a stirring tenor number.  Imagine the big Pav' reaching the climax in Nessun Dorma.  Any proud owner of a new W116 would be inspired by the car, the sound system and the music as the hair on the back of their necks rose.  A collaboration between MB and major musicians of the period to include a mix tape would've been a win for all.

Wolfgang Germany - you have made me very happy!

In a bid to revisit my childhood, especially since loosing my Dad a few years ago, I have been hunting high and low for this very cassette.   Aside from tipping my parents house upside down, I also took my search to the web on various MB forums.  I've been at it on and off for ages now!

These songs take me back to being a little kid in the back of Dad's 1980 300TD blasting through winding country roads in the southern highlands of NSW, Australia.

Thank you!  :'(
