Found my self watching this show yesterday,

The lead lady at the end of the episode drove away in a brand new 450SEL and shortly before that, Magnum arrived to save the day in a R107 SL.

Awesome eye candy and impossible to see in that condition these days, plenty of classic old mercs in these cheesy old American shows   8)

Haha!

However, I never fancied wearing the type of shorts he does. Brave men they were in the 80s. I used to watch this when I was little along with MacGyver and Johnny Quest!  :D

Big_Richard

hahaha, yes, his offensive shorts do become immediately apparent when watching that show.

I think it needs to be "digitally remastered" to hide his junk.  ::)

I vaguely remember a show called Hart vs Hart from the same era that seemed to have plenty of Mercs.

Hart versus hart was classic. Mr hart had a 107, the mrs had a 123 te. It was sweet. If only Robyn had 6.9s rather than feraris!

Oscar started a thread a while ago about w116 in movies. I added an intro of one of magnums earlier series from 1980. It is really a pleasure looking at these cars when they still were modern and very expensive. It is even fun looking at all the other cars from that particular era. However this w116 didn't play a bigger role more than just in the beginning.

Very very far off topic, whenever Trading Places is on I always love seeing the 600 with Eddie Murphy in it, with Dan Ackroyd driving next to him shouting out "that's my car ... Coleman ... he's wearing my Harvard tie!"  Great movie.

The two major cars in that show were the Ferrari 308 that Magnum drove and the the Audi 5000 (200 Turbo in most markets) that his boss drove.

I owned an Audi 200 Turbo at the time the show was current in the early to mid '80's.

I guess VAG fronted up with the money to get it's car on the show.

Yep, they need to make another movie staring a 6.9, only this time it shouldn't get destroyed  ::)

Probably the most sightings on a regular basis of a 450 SEL was the one driven by 'JR Ewing' on Dallas. His brother 'Bobby Ewing' drove a 450 SL and then later the newer SL's.

'JR' later drove the newer SEL's.

A bit off topic, I drove a 1976 308 GTB as a daily driver from 1997 to 2001 and a 1985 308 GTS Qv (The Magnum car) as a semi daily from 2008 onwards and I can't tell you how many "Magnum" comments you'd get at the servo.  Always from people in their 40's onwards.  Usually it was, "Is that the Magnum car" or "Where is your moustache."  Cringe!!!

They are one of the most beautifully shaped Ferraris.  Technical question - was it shod in XWXs?

Hahaha, an XWX question!  The carburettor 308's, so from 1975 to 1980 all came with 14" wheels and XWX's as standard.  205/70-14.  Standard rims were the same as the W116, 6 1/2" but optionally uuo could order 7 1/2" with the same size tyres.

Here is my 1976 carb car with them on 6 1/2" rims:

From 1977 you could order your 308 with 16X7" wheels front and 16X8" wheels rear but it was a very expensive option, the wheels were sand cast magnesium.  Not many cars were delivered as such.

When the 308's went to fuel injection in 1981 the cars initially came with XWX's like the carb cars but then went to the metric TRX tyres from Michelin.  The 308 GTS above is pictured with the original 220mm/55/390mm TRX's on.  I have since changed the wheels to 16".

Yes, the 308 is a really lovely looking car.  It's best in silver or blue I think.  I think the coupe (GTB) looks better than the GTS (Targa top).  This is my carb car with the later 16" wheels fitted for a track day.
