Title: m100 forum 6.9 list
Post by: rumb on 12 May 2023, 12:05 PM
Is anyone here a paying member of the m100 forum that can get the list of known 6.9's?

Nope.  I left when they retooled the site.  I wonder if they have any members left TBH...At least very few 6.9  members I am sure as they always saw the 6.9 as less than their mighty 600's and 6.3's ::)

Like everyone else, when they insisted on payment to use the forum, that was it.  I had one member asking me for my list of Australian 6.9s (300 or so).  I was not inclined to send these after they didnt even correct the ones they had, when I told them they had cars listed with the wrong pics with the wrong VINs.  The site was also much better when it was all models listed/posting together, rather than separating the models as it kept the threads ticking over with shared knowledge.

I rejoined the M100 group in the hope that it might have somehow improved.  There is some activity and another of their signature "Lodefest" events is apparently in the works.  But the forum and quality of technical exchange remains dismal.  My impression is that M100 has become (or always was?) overwhelming social.  Most folks take their cars to some extreme, specialty shop for work.  Very few wrench spinners.  Anyway, I'll have a look and report back.  Cheers,

Robert, I did a pretty good dig on their site.  Couldn't find any car registries for any models.  If you ever saw one there do you have any recollection where?

I was paying member for a year. I was very disappointed about this low-quality (my opinion) Clubexpress-Forum. As a sample due to the process of becoming a paying member my account lost all my prevoius messages, very disappointing, also nobody out there that was able to help. Never thought about renewing membership.
I think the forum is seemingly dead, are there more than 5 messages a month?

@Dave: if I remember right then log in, then you see a topic "Registry", and hidden here should be the list of cars that Paul assembled.
@Robert: please ask Paul before using his list, he has put years of work into this.

Regards,
Thomas

Understood, I asked and they only said I needed to be a paying member to get it.  Dont know what good it does for any of them to have it since they dont really care about the lowly 6.9's.  Years ago anyone could get it for free and I should have saved it back then.

Dave, yes need to logon and go to members area, it's supposed to be there. But with the way they run things who knows?

I've said this over and over with regards the M100 forum and do feel somewhat vindicated in this.  Tying the forum to a club membership was a huge mistake.

They simply did not move with the times and that club is dying a slow death.  Makes me think of comedian Mitch Hedberg's bit on club sandwiches, very funny ;D

Robert, I finally managed to find it.  There are a zillion search criteria to set if desired, or none at all.  The results are a huge list of links to individual cars pages that must each be opened to see the data for the individual car.  It's nothing like a speadsheet or a table, nothing that seems downloadable without being an IT guy.  What are you looking for exactly?

the list used to be ok in its format, just the VIN, owner, colour and a pic. sounds like they tried to expand it quite a bite Dave.  unfortunately, there was a lot of errors in the previous one which I imagine has been carried over.  It also surprised me so few LHD cars were recorded.  I would suggest maybe starting a post for NA, Canada and the UK like the Australian 6.9 sales one.  you dont want too many comments, but just list the few things we pop up on our thread on this forum.  With time it will grow to something of interest to those looking at 6.9s.  That reminds me, another one popped up yesterday ill add to the Australian one!

That was kind of what I wanted to do for a North America list.  I just wanted to start with known ones.

Here's what it looks like.  First are search criteria.  Next are the hits.  Finally, each hit opens a specific page on the hit list.  It's easy to find specific cars if you have enough info to do a narrow search.  But it's not like you can get a nice list, for example, of all black 6.9's with green velour.

A few years ago (when everyone was stuck at home), my brother and I were considering starting an online registry of all 6.9s ever made. The goal was to end up with an accurate number of cars still in existence. We laid out some groundwork for attributes (VIN, exterior color, interior color, last known whereabouts, etc), but never got past that stage. I don't think we even began logging individual cars. We lost the motivation to continue when it dawned on us just how big of a number 7,380 is. Also, neither of us has ever owned a W116 (let alone a 6.9), so it felt silly to be putting in all that effort towards a car we didn't even actually have. ;D

But I would be super encouraging towards anyone who wants to take this project on, and I can't think of a better home for it than W116.org.

Additional thoughts on the user interface: the screenshots of the former (incomplete) registry above provide a lot of info, but far too much info for a default view of the registry in my opinion. The default view should be just a chronological list of all VINs, with a simple visual indicator to show whether the car still exists, doesn't exist, or when it was last seen if its status is unknown. Then you could click on each car and see its specifics, and also have a search function more like what we see above.

Interested to see where this goes.

Rum, Shervin, Dave.  Start a North America thread.  like the Australian one, the must is a VIN, where seen(site for sale), price, and some particulars.  put in some questions.  ideally minimum commentary so people can scroll through the cars and focus on them. comments could be on another thread.  you would quickly find they will rack up.  doesnt hurt to put them up? I just chip away at the Aussie one when they come up. with 40000 views for the Australian one, its a popular thread and I dont doubt a US one would be too!
