I can only echo the comments made by Styria, look at how good the seats are, they aren't crushed or collapsed, look at the paint on the air cleaner, the heads, all the little fixtures and fittings under the bonnet. Check out the factory tint on the windows, everything looks minty fresh.

Makes you feel like you have just jumped in the time machine and gone back to 1979 and walked into your local MB dealership.

You can pickup a clapped out, worn out 450SEL they are a dime a dozen, try finding one as nice as that for sale again.

Styria and Des I'm glad you concur as Des said what really impressed me was how clean and original the engine bay looked.Interesting though that a formula 1 driver should have one I suppose it just goes to show how well rounded these cars really are I also belive that James Hunt owned a 450SEL 6.9 .This appears to be a pretty good indictment of how great these cars are don't you agree.
regards,
Rob.

Correct yes, I have a W123 230, a very slow car in acceleration yet pushing it through corners and windy roads it is often a lot faster "through the bends" than other cars that are much faster in a straight line. She will lean right over on the wheels but grip to the road really well. I don't consider myself a good driver but when you can push your car through corners and S bends faster than the posted recommendations I think you can say you have a stable platform. Same goes with the 6.9 you have such a stable and predictable platform, you can drive it like a sports car yet you are sitting in the banker's limo.

Agreed.  My standard approach to road-bend speed advisory signs (or at least those above 45 km/h) is to take the posted number (say, 80) and apply it to the outer ring of numbers on my bisexual speedo (say, 80 mph) - then add 10.  Works perfectly on my 116 280SE; leave off the extra 10 and the same applies to my 108 280SE.

Ha excellent!

So I'm not the only one that thinks that the signs are "recommendations" or "advisories".  Here in South Africa speed limits are fairly generous, and I have done just fine by adding 50% to the recommendations.

I very nearly came short though once on an industry private road - I didn't know the road well and it was misty.  There was a bend marked 60km/h and I thought "ha" and gave it 50% extra.  Well I got around the bend with the front end squealing and the rear drifting.  In hind sight I think that for that particular bend, 60 would already be VERY fast - the kind of bend that tightens and tightens.

Hmmm.

I've long wondered how the roads authorities decide on  "suitable" recommended speeds for bends; most times (in Oz, at least) it would seem they used a kid's billycart running on perambulator wheels with rope steering!  But there will occasionally be a hairy one that's been over- rather than underrated.  That's when one really appreciates a Benz's forgiving handling qualities.   :o
