Andrew, sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've been out all evening.  Thanks so much for getting the info off the sitcker.  It would appear that they are ever so slightly different.  ie; the intake valve clearance 0.08mm v's 0.10mm and the part number.  I double checked mine it's defintiely all numbers from what I can see. "6500 0428".  But at least it appears the only thing missing is the minimum CO measurement, ie 1.5%.  I might have to hit photoshop and do one up myself as I may be the only one that needs one.

Would be interested to hear what your engine number is.  Mine's 116 983.

Back to your car.  Nice buy! 8) 8)  Nice early steerinig wheel with the chrome bits on the spokes.  Interior and exterior looks bloody good.  Hope you enjoy it and lets see this tuning sorted so you can give it a boot full. ;D

Well done, Andrew - I hope your new toy will bring you hours of fun.

Now............get yourself off to a shrink and get some therapy, otherwise you're gonna end up with a garage full of these things and turn into me. Andrew listen to me! There's no cure for this, my boy - try and get some help while you can - nip this in the bud!!!

Aaah, whathefuck!! Teenagers know everything anyway, so you go out and buy all the W116's you can save. We'll be there for you.  ;)
"You've bought another bloody car?!? We should have you committed!" he shrieked, storming out of the room

Thanks Oscar and Grant.

I can't explain it, but I'm really looking forward to doing things to this car (not that...). It carries a certain individual character, as they all do, which I'm looking forward to getting to know.

I just checked the engine number Oscar, it's: 116 028 EDIT: 116 983

The sump looks kind of odd too. I'm not sure if I can successfully take a pic or not, might be hard to see. But basically it looks sort of flat and it joins to the block in an odd curve... probably doesn't make sense I know, but trust me it's different to the other cars.

EDIT: Hmm, maybe not, the brown 450SEL has something similar I think but it's harder to see. Still these cars have odd looking sumps compared to other cars but I suppose it's for clearence purposes.

Andrew, and we are watching your progress with anticipation.

I think 116 028 is the chassis number.

The engine number would probably be 116983 for earlier ones, 116985 for later ones.

Why thank you Michel!  ;)

And yes, Ryan your right. Jeez I'm being a bit thick today. The engine number is 116 983, as expected. :)

I'll take a pic of my sump today sometime for you to compare.  Mines like a square cake tin. :-\  If yours curves in the middle it might be from road damage.  Being a farmer's car, my car had landed on a few contour banks and had a convex shaped oil pan.  Mechanic bashed it straight and it's remarkably still leak free.

I dunno, the curve you speak of made me think you may have a metal bash plate under there too.

EDIT:  How does yours compare?  You can see mine has had a tough previous life especially looking at the cross member behind the oil pan.

Wish that car had a manual box and was in Melbourne - I'd have it on the race track before you could say valve-bouncing redline!

South Africans don't know what left hand mirrors are for and thus never fitted them to their cars.

;D ;D ;D

My W116's got one... ;)

Andrew280SEL

Sorry Oscar, I didn't see your edit. :-[

Yes, even a quick glance at your pic and I can say yours is the same as mine. I haven't looked at mine from the bottom yet, but the car doesn't seem to leak any oil which is a good thing. :)

WHOOOOSH!

man oh man, I just got the 350 back from the mechanics  after a proper tune up, and man what a transformation! With the timing set right, new points and plugs, it really goes! ;D ;D

Compression is reported to be really good, with only one cylinder being down a bit:

150 |      | 160

140 |      | 160

150 |      | 150

120 |      | 140

       Front

Very happy with it.

Now I shall continue on my journey for the AMG makeover. :)

EDIT: Oh yeah, I also purchased a new set of stainless steel wheel arch moulds, which the car originally had but the original owner took them off before sale. Should look really nice, especially when I put a spoiler on it...

Did they offer any suggestions as to why the front right compression is down ? Sticking valve perhaps ? Has it been sitting around prior to your purchase ? Might be an idea to run it with ATF or an upper cylinder lubricant and see if this makes any difference. Could also have been the tester. It would be unusual for it to need rings in only one cylinder, and the others are reasonably consistent.

Andrew280SEL

No idea about that I'm afraid. I'll just have to do as you suggest and put in some upper cylinder lubricant. There's no logical reason my small mind can think of for it, the engine doesn't do anything wrong. Doesn't use oil, doesn't leak oil, starts all the time without fail, idles well, smooth etc.

Dunno, is it something to really worry about?

I would have to wonder why it was so low compared to the others. It may just be a sticking valve - there is no logical reason why one cylinder should be down. If it was me, I would run some UCL through it for a while and re-test it.
