How much do W116's cost in your country?

I compiled this little table to give you all an idea of what W116's go for in South Africa.  I have not included concours examples as they would fetch prices that depend on the individual case and the demand at the time :

The prices indicated are in US$ converted from the SOuth African rands price using the current exchange rate (apprx)

THis was not a heavy scientific survey, merely my experience based on answering many, many adverts

Hello gentlemen and other assorted creatures

In France, the SELLING price, not the asking price is :

Car             Needs restoration              Nice condition              Mint

280SE          400â,¬                                2000â,¬                       3000â,¬

350/450        800â,¬                               2500-3500â,¬               4000-5000â,¬

6.9               NA -parst car is 1000â,¬       6000-7500â,¬               7500-9000â,¬

Assessor prices are significantly higher but reality prevails, these are all gas-suckers  :(

I paid $3500USD for a rust free 1976 450SEL.  I probably paid $500 - $700 more than it's actual value, but it is a solid, strong running car.

We got in and drove from Dallas Texas to Seattle Washington in three and a half days without a hitch.

Denis,

thanks for the info.  It was interesting to see that the prices are generally similar to what we have here.

Come guys, where in the world are the last rust-free W116 bargains?

Ryan

In UK,

(in UK pounds, see http://www.xe.com to convert)
200-500 for a rough 280SE-450SEL
1000-1500 for a decent condition 280SE-450SEL
>3000 for one in a nice condition

6.9s are from 500-1000 for parts cars, 3000 for middle of the road examples and over 5K for ones in very good condition.

280S was not sold in UK because it was considered too poorly spec'd.
I've seen all other models either on the road or at the scrap.

With fuel at US$1.70 per litre or Euro1.40 per litre it is no wonder that all but treasured few examples are destined for the junk yard.

I paid $4,000 USD (3,147 Euros, 2,180 GBP) for my 1977 280SE in May this year.  Looks like I paid on the high side but I think it is in great condition.  It is all original but for one repaint, which is a near-match to the original Astral Silver.  It is a one owner car with all books and records as it was dealer maintained.  The air conditioner needs a re-charge, which I am unhappy about but that can (and will) be fixed.

I seen a 6.9 here go for $14,000 and cheapest I seen was $300 years ago.

Denis

Hi macatron

No, you did not overpay. Cars near original with no or little corrosion and records command whatever people are willing to pay. Your car could sell for 6000USD in France.

Remember all US$ conversion.  Also, the prices are a bit rough.  Feel free to correct me on any.  Compiling a list was harder than i thought.  I'm still scratching my head.

What I value a car, what a seller asks and what someone pays varies soooo much.  Also, there's such a big difference with same versions with different specs.  eg a good nic 74 450sel and 79 450sel that has all the options.  Anyway it's a start.

"Unique Cars" magazine quotes prices for 3 similar categories including our 116 every year.  If I find my copy from last year I'll let you know what the experts say.

Agreed,

The price of a GOOD 116 is whatever soneone will pay for it.  Right now in South Africa there are 2 450SEL's for sale.

The first one is a '74 with no options, 270 000km, basically straight if cosmetically a little tatty - asking US$10 000 at a dealer.

The second is a '78 with all options, 100 000km, My dad viewed it and says its spotless, asking US$ 11 000 private sale.

Point is both of them have been for sale for a very long time.  The dealer one about a year now.  Either no-one in South Africa wants them, or no-one knows what it is.  Also, for most South Africans, US$10 000 is a LOT of money for a car that is neither usable as daily transport nor a collectors item.

I am playing a waiting game on the private 450SEL above.  If its still on offer when I'm next in Cape Town I'll check it out.  If its spectacular I may move out my R107 to make space and free up cash.

Mike,

The reason I think I over paid even though it's rust free is that the so much is not working.  The AC, climate control, cruise control, central locking, rear windows etc...

You got a very good deal on yours.
