Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011 - W116 comes of age

When a gold W116 is being exhibited along side a 1936 500K, 300SL Gull Wing, 280SL Pagoda and 220SE W108 Coupe Convertible you know that the respect for the 70s autobahn cruiser is going up. The Mercedes-Benz showroom at this year's Festival Of Speed contained many cars but at the centre was the newish SLS surrounded by the 5 aforementioned cars with the gold 1980 6.9 being one of them. As my girlfriend might attest I nearly wet myself.

The IPhone pictures may not be too hot but you should be able to see that the car is as mint as they come, the interior is a gorgeous brown velour and the chrome is as new. It is to be expected when the car is part of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Collection.

Here're some pics. In the second there is yours truly (a little sunburnt  ::) ).

Our American readers may be interested to hear that this year's theme was the Indy 500. There was a big show complete with race winning cars from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s to the modern day. All driven by 15 winners of that race. There was a brass band, a compare from the Indy race, and a lady who sang a song about Indiana. I loved the Penske racers driven by members of the Unser family no less.

Nice 6.9  :)

When I see photos like that it makes me think about how I should get my act together and get the 6.3 and 6.9 sorted  :P

I find it astonishing that MB's can be parked inside without drip trays under the engine bay  8)

Great to see a 6.9 in the company of a gullwing. Looks like a great example.
Was there a good reaction to the car? any comments?

Goodwood is a big festival with lots of amazing and rare cars. The 500K and that immaculate Gullwing certainly get more attention but I think the 6.9 stood it's ground as a luxury means of transportation. Gold with brown velour is an iconic 70s combo and that was unique.

Hey, I was there too.  My mate got some tickets from one of the suppliers he deals with, and I saw that w116 too.  Pretty sure its the same one that has been used in an advert recently (the one where all the old mercs are queuing up for space in the spotlight)
