Finding Vehicle History

I've applied for my data card, which has got me to thinking...

I've been wondering how to find out about the history of my car? Prior to the 80s of course, VINs were different between car companies. Without the adoption of a standard VIN, it is hard to find the history on the typical sites (carfax, et al).

So what have you guys done to find your histories (when you didn't know it from the get-go)?

I'm on my way to doing that, slowly but surely! 


I'm curious as to where it was built, who first bought it, who all has owned it etc. Luckily I found out that the Florida Dept of Motor Vehicles will do a complete title history search for very cheap (about $16).
