real 250 km/h (26o km/h displayed) at 5.500 rpm.
Same engine as the 'Rote Sau'
Velour interior was more expensive than leather.
.... and, important:  A W 116 can be told from a W 126 by the bumpers.

That's what they say.

You've got the leather and velour prices mixed up.  Leather was more expensive than velour.  Furthermore, leather was standard on the 6.9, with velour being an option in which there was no upcharge.  Essentially, leather or velour were available on the 6.9 as standard.  No upcharge for either choice.

I was only citing what they say in the spot.
They made some mistakes: 
The 'Rote Sau didn't have the same engine as the 6.9.
Leather was more expensive than velour, as UTn_boy writes. They mixed it up in the spot.
I don't know if their correlation of top speed and rpm is correct.

btw: my EU price list nr. 16, valid starting from january 28, 1976, says that the 450 SEL and 6.9 come standard with velour, and leather being available with a surcharge of 333 DM. Leather price for all other EU W116 was 1598,40 DM.

How am I the only one impressed by this sort of performance on a 40+ year old car? :)

other way round here in germany,
see Pricelist 23 from 18.12.1978
You can see:
Velour is standard here in germany ("standard" also means that there are no additional costs)
Leather was an option at additional 380.80DM.

That much power at the wheels left me speechless and, struck by awe, I diverted to topics of lesser importance  :).

Kidding aside: I am not familiar with how much power is typically lost on the way from the engine to the wheels. But is age by itself a reason for power loss?  45 years is notable, admittedly, but the car is well maintained, has 157.000 km, apparently well maintained:

Furthermore, the car is not paralyzed by a cozy oldtimer way of driving:  The guy claims he ikes the pedal-to-the-metal way and frequently has to gas up after 300 km.

Rule of thumb used to be 30% loss through the auto drivetrain, so approx 300hp. That wasn’t uncommon in performance cars of the time but it was special in a luxury barge, especially the torque!!!!

Among many other things, automatic transmissions have progressed considerably since the '70s. Things like lockup torque converters for example give some extra efficiency.
With 286HP and 550Nm as the factory crankshaft figures, we're talking just 21% power and 20% torque losses in the drive train in this case. IMO, that is pretty darn good.
