Hello 116's
here is the first acquisition for 2013, in good original condition but motor seized.
The story here is that in 1976 the original owner took a trip back to his homeland of Yugoslavia there here bought the car then drove it round Europe while on holiday, he then had it shipped back to Australia where it lived on a "fruit block" in Mildura it was registered until 2008 then driven around the farm until 2010 when the motor failed. Mildura is a dry inland city and so luckily no rust visable at first inspection.
will follow up with photos shortly
Cheers
Rob

Looks like red is your colour Rob. Not a common colour for Mercs in Aus.  Congrats on your laters addition.  Is it a keeper or a parts car?

Looking forward to the pics.  I picked up another one last week.  There is something about them that means I can't walk past one for sale hahaha

It looks that way Ken,
I might start a sub class to my collection " all red coloured" W 116's

My goodness Rob,

Yet another in the collection! It looks pretty good as a project. 8)

The only reason I'm holding back, is that I don't have the space (yet!), haha.

Nice pick up Rob.  What month was it built?  My 450SE is 9/76.

Also how can you tell if it is a euro high compression engine.  I normally rely on the speedo as a clue to it being a euro car?

The 280SE I picked up last week looks like an Aus delivery but it was much more lively to drive than I expected.  Certainly much quicker on the pickup than my 81 280E.

I've seen that one on gumtree... or ebay...
was it with seized heads?

interesting story...

so it's a Euro import?

No smog choking?
Vitamin C for SL... the SLC

Euro cars had no EGR valve, airpump and no carbon canister (I think).  And if it's an import it'll be missing an Aussie compliance plate.

If it has no rust in the firewall I'd be looking at rebuilding the engine (or doing a conversion) and fixing up the seats, plus the faded interior pieces.  It'd be very nice when complete.  What's the colour code?

I cannot find a built date plate anywhere, so I checked behind the padded steering wheel centre, nothing! so I checked the radiator reserve bottle and it is marked 3rd month 1976, so it is certainly a not earlier than "76

The way I recognize a Euro motor amongst other things, is the radiator. The Aussie one is missing the engine oil cooler down the side and the exhaust manifolds don't have pipes and valves attached and of course no air pump or carbon canister.

colour code is 504H " English Red" same colour as the Golden Gate Bridge?

Yes, this car was for sale on "gumtree" I did a deal with the owner who delivered it to my place. it was a 5Hour round trip from Warnambool.

Hey Tim, Yes I am lucky to have the space to park all these projects, and a wife who understands that a man needs his Shed to escape to.  Is there a hint there Tim, are you looking to acquire a shed or something?

last night I did a quick inspection on the motor, removing the rocker covers I found the the left hand camshaft bearings had failed, there were metal splinters all over and the cam had then split and jumped out of the front tower. what a mess, looks like it had been run dry with no oil, the chain was still OK and had not broken or jumped off the sprockets.  These motors are tuff but need oil? I don't think this motor is worth doing up as it would have other unknown damaged bits.

Cheers

Rob

Thanks Rob and oversize, I'll have a closer look at the 280SE.

I thought even Aussie 450s had the side oil coolers?  It was the Aussie 6.9s that didn't.....  The compliance plates were normally on the LHS of the firewall or on the LH inner guard towards the back

Wasn't that for ATF?  The side coolers were for engine oil....
